A short but fierce classic took place at the Kingdom Arena as Al Hilal triumphed over Al Ittihad, 3-2, in week eight of the Saudi Professional League. Ollie Watkins made a big impact in the Riyadh men's win, notching a goal and two assists as the team consolidated their lead at the top of the table. The scoring started in the 11th minute when Al Hilal's new English signings worked together: Ollie Watkins passed the ball to Gabriel Martinelli who opened the lead for the hosts. Al Ittihad soon responded in the 22nd minute when Youssef En-Nesyri leveled the game from Marwan Al-Sahafi's pass. Eight minutes after the equaliser, Al Hilal went back in front when Watkins scored himself to make it 2-1. There was also a goal disallowed after a VAR review in the added minutes of the first half — a testament to how hot and competitive the first half of the match was.

In the second half, Al Hilal put the lead away in the 64th minute when Crisencio Samrovil finished off a pass from Watkins again, making it 3-1 and showing the hosts' ability to catch Al Ittihad's stifling defence. Although the visitors pushed hard late in the game, they could only go one down through Steven Berghuis's penalty in the 89th minute and there was not enough time for a complete comeback. The win gave Al Hilal 21 points and cemented their place at the top of the league, while Al Ittihad remained on 17 points and suffered their first defeat of the season — a stinging blow ahead of their next leg. The result has immediate implications for both teams' schedules: Al Hilal will play their second game in the AFC Champions League phase in Qatar against Al Sadd on Tuesday, while on the same day, Al Ittihad will return to Jeddah to host Shabab Al Ahli — the team owned by Sardar Azmoun and Saeid Ezatolahi. Al Ittihad will be forced to shrug off the loss and prepare properly if they don't want to carry heavy emotions from the classic. Overall, Al Hilal showed the strength of their attack and coordination between the new acquisitions, while Al Ittihad need to recover defensively before the important face-off this week. Ollie Watkins was the most valuable player in the match — a goal and two assists — and made a big contribution to the team's success at a critical stage of the campaign.

What's next

Al Ittihad are expected to face Shabab Al Ahli, where they need to bounce back from defeat to maintain their position in the Saudi Pro League. This match will be important not only for their league but also for their preparation for the next matches in the AFC Champions League.
