Despite Real Madrid's steady business in the current transfer window, news has emerged that there is a player new to Manchester City who was once Jose Mourinho's top target for Los Blancos' midfield. While Real Madrid have shown the quality of their summer signings — evident in their excellent start to the season — whether their midfield depth is sufficient has been debated. Mourinho focused on improving the midfield when he was in charge of Madrid, and he has identified a target that he really likes. But due to various factors—including market competition, price, and team needs—that transfer didn't go through for Real Madrid. Instead, the said player flew to the English Premier League and set sail for Manchester City, who are also known for their shrewd transfer strategy and long-term strengthening of their midfield. For followers of European football, this story highlights the ever-changing dynamics in the transfer market. While Real Madrid have been aggressive and effective in other positions, strengthening the midfield has remained a challenge, especially as some of their key players in the middle are aging. On the other hand, Manchester City continue to strengthen their midfield, which has been the cornerstone of the team's success under Pep Guardiola — which is why they remain one of the favorites in the Premier League and Champions League. This decision further highlights the uncertainty and excitement of the European football transfer window: a player can be a coach's main plan, but in the end will go in a different direction due to the speed of the market. What's more, it shows how big teams such as Manchester City and Real Madrid are constantly selecting and competing for the best talent—especially in the midfield that is now considered the heart of modern football. With the arrival of this new player at Manchester City, expect more confidence and depth in their midfield, while Real Madrid will continue to search for the right formula to ensure success in Spain and Europe.

What's next

Manchester City are expected to be active in the summer transfer window to further strengthen their squad, especially in midfield.
