Chelsea have entered a fierce race to land Marcos Llorente from Atletico Madrid, reports Graeme Bailey. The experienced full-back has already proven his worth in La Liga and now several English giants, including Liverpool and Manchester City, are monitoring his situation before the next transfer window opens. In the current season, Llorente has shown solid form for Atletico. He recorded one goal and one assist in eight matches in all competitions last season – an indication of his ability to contribute not only in defense but also in attack. As a 31-year-old player, Llorente is still recognized as one of the most versatile full-backs in La Liga, able to play as a right-back, wide midfielder, and even a box-to-box midfielder when the team needs it. An important aspect of the matter is the end of Llorente's contract with Atletico Madrid at the end of this campaign. This leaves interested teams such as Chelsea with the opportunity to try to get him on the cheap this January, or wait for a free transfer when the contract finally expires. If Chelsea get Llorente, he will contribute a lot to the defensive line of the team, especially since he is known for his good tackling, speed in running, and decisiveness in getting the ball.

However, there are doubts as to whether Llorente can adapt to the fast and physical game in the Premier League. But his experience at the highest levels of football, as well as the ability to adapt to different positions, gives Xabi Alonso an extra defensive option. Expectations are also high that Llorente will compete for a regular spot in Chelsea's first eleven, who are currently looking to add veteran leadership and depth for the coming seasons. At the age of 31, Llorente still has a few years left to play at the highest level and could be a steal if Chelsea get him, especially on a free transfer. For coach Xabi Alonso, it is a smart move to hire or wait for the services that Llorente can provide, who can bring skill and experience to the young Chelsea squad. With Premier League clubs constantly changing and strengthening, fans will surely be looking forward to the next chapter of the battle for Marcos Llorente. The scene of the transfer window in Europe will expand even more when such names are at stake.

What's next

Chelsea are expected to continue their pursuit of Llorente in the upcoming summer transfer window, especially as his contract with Atletico Madrid is nearing its end. Competition from Liverpool and Manchester City could speed up their decision, so quick action is essential. If he can't be snapped up this January, he could be free next summer, giving Chelsea a bigger opportunity.
