Why it matters

The match between Esteghlal and Al Shamal is not just a simple game, but an opportunity for David Prats to show what he learned from his experience in Barcelona. Al Shamal's success in the Qatar Stars League underscored their progress in the League of Elites of Asian football, aiming to be recognized at a higher level of competition. Having a coach with a background from a prestigious academy brings a new perspective and strategy to their game.

Key Points

• David Prats: Former Alumnus of Barcelona, Contender.
• David Prats, Xavi's former teammate and from the Barcelona system, will appear as the coach of Al Shamal against Esteghlal.
• حريف سهراب, از مكتب جاوي و بركسالنة!.

There is only enthusiasm and intention in the upcoming match between Esteghlal and Al Shamal in the League of Elites of Asia—especially when two coaches who both have unique stories in football will face each other. Sohrab Bakhtiari Zadeh leads Esteghlal with a wealth of experience in Iranian football, while David Prats, a coach from Barcelona and former longtime partner of Xavi Hernandez, will lead the Al Shamal side. Prats is a native of Barcelona, and he traveled football as a former striker in FC Barcelona's youth academy. Although his career was reversed due to injury, he quickly shifted from playing to coaching and football analysis. He started out as a coach with Sant Andreu's youth team in Spain before moving to Qatar in 2018—where he took charge of Al Sadd's U-23 squad. Prats is known as an analyst of tactics and opponents, close to the profile of Xavi's teams, first at Al Sadd and continued at Barcelona as part of the technical staff. His skill in developing strategy and reading the opponent made him stable before he was appointed as the head coach of Al Shamal in the middle of the 2024 season.

Not long after, he led Al Shamal to a historic victory: they won for the first time as runners-up in the Qatar Stars League. Al Shamal also dominated several Asian matches: they surprised Al Ittihad, won against Al Hilal 3-1 with a quick transition from defense, and kept their organization against Tractor. On the other hand, Sohrab relies on a solid defense with three backs, offensive transitions with the help of Asani and Gholizadeh, and hopes to once again break the discipline and strategic system of Prats. The loss of Ashurmatov will be a challenge for Sohrab, who will force them to change their defensive line—a critical adjustment that could change the course of the battle. Prats' success as Qatar's Coach of the Season 2025-2026 (beating out great coaches Roberto Mancini and Vicente Moreno) is proof of the skill he brought from Barcelona school to Asian elite football. The entire region will be focused on this battle as it will be a battle of Iran's football experience against Barcelonista's modern tactics. It's a big question who will prevail: Bakhtiari Zadeh's deep attacking approach or Prats' innovative Barcelona system.

What's next

The match between Al Shamal and Esteghlal is expected to be tight, especially since both have a deep knowledge of their game styles. Prats is set to show his tactical knowledge against the experience of Sohrab Bakhtiari Zadeh. The result of this match could affect Al Shamal's position in the Asian Elite League and their promotion to the Qatar Stars League.
