Emery is just king in the Europa League; Basco has been defeated in

According to Tuttomercatoweb.

Why it matters

Unai Emery's back-to-back defeats in the UEFA Super Cup expose a poor record despite his Europa League success. His ability to win five Europa League titles was not enough to pass the challenge of the Super Cup, hindering his goal of winning this prestigious trophy. These defeats may affect his reputation as a coach in European competitions.

Key Points

• Emery is just king in the Europa League; Basco has been defeated in.
• Unai Emery, with five Europa League titles, failed again in the UEFA Super Cup — his 4th defeat in four occasions, including the recent clash with Salzburg.
• Emery re solo in Europa League. Il basco perde la 4ª Supercoppa su 4 tentativi.

Unai Emery's curse-like relationship with the UEFA Super Cup does not change. Although considered the "king of the Europa League" due to five championships in that competition, he has not been able to add his name to the list of Super Cup winners — he has lost all four times he has faced the reigning Champions League champion. According to the record of his previous attempts, Emery has already suffered heavy defeats: in 2014, while at Sevilla, Real Madrid beat them with a score of 2-0; what followed in 2015 was a very close battle against Barcelona which ended 5-4 in extra time in favor of the Catalans. In 2021, Emery's Villarreal reached penalty shootouts against Chelsea and eventually lost on penalties. Adding to his palmarès is a lost Europa League final as Arsenal coach — they lost against Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea in Baku in 2019. More recently, the opportunity also brought Emery to Salzburg to try his luck again at a Super Cup — and again to no avail. Back-to-back defeats in the Super Cup put a clear mark: despite his efficiency and dominant record in the Europa League, he has yet to successfully parlay that win into another European trophy.

Important context: the UEFA Super Cup is a one-off contest between the winner of the Champions League and the Europa League. Being a one-off match, it often describes a battle between two different styles and strategies, and sometimes hinges on a small detail—a wrong decision, a colossal defense, or game-day luck. For Emery, his legacy in the Europa League is unshakable: five titles are proof of his ability in the continental competition. But the absence of the Super Cup in his cabinet is clearly a missing page in the chronology of his achievements. As the opportunities continue and the teams he leads change, it remains to be seen if he can achieve that trophy in the future as well. What's next

Despite the defeat, Emery is expected to continue his mission to win the Europa League next season. His experience and success in this competition gives hope that he can make up for it in future opportunities. Teams like Aston Villa could see a lift in their season outlook by focusing on domestic and European competitions.
