Iran's Futbol Federation has released a clear statement regarding the deal with Yahya Golmohammadi to lead Team Omid, the country's under-23 team. According to the report, the official newspaper of the federation devoted the front page of its second edition to the said news, including a photo of Golmohammadi with Mohammad Salari and Ali Taraghlizadeh as a symbol of a new beginning for the youth national team program. Before the announcement, two federation officials headed to Erbil with Golmohammadi's lawyer to arrange the termination of the veteran coach's contract with Duhok, a team in Iraq. After several days of speculation, it was confirmed last night that the Duhok matter had been properly and professionally closed. The federation immediately announced that they had an agreement with Golmohammadi for a three-year contract. The official publication emphasizes that Golmohammadi's role is a national mission focused on a single goal: to return Iran to the Olympic stage in the 2028 edition. In this regard, the federation ensured that the process of terminating his previous contract was carried out in a completely respectful and professional environment, a sign of respect on all sides. It was also added that this agreement will open the door for an intensive and long-term plan at the youth level—a step that is important to systematize the preparation of Team Omid.

Also part of the statement is that Golmohammadi's contract is effective until the end of the Olympics 2028. This means that the new coach has enough time to build the foundation of the team, starting with defining the core group of players, laying out a clear style of play, and developing a competitive calendar of friendlies and training camps. In this framework, the federation sees the opportunity to have a continuous program from scouting to actual competition. Although the federation has not yet laid out the details of the next step, it was stated in the newspaper that Golmohammadi's tenure at the national level will begin soon. The immediate move from Duhok to Team Omid also signals that the new coach will prioritize aligning plans with the international youth football calendar, including tournaments and qualifiers that will prepare Iran for a coveted 2028 Olympic berth. All in all, the message of Iran's Futbol Federation is clear: the agreement with Yahya Golmohammadi is not just a change in direction of Team Omid, but a statement of intent to take the long-term development of the team seriously. In the face of high competition in the region, early preparation and a solid plan could be the key to Iran's ticket to the Olympics. Details of the backroom staff, starting mini-camp schedule, and possible list of first invitation players are expected to be revealed in the coming days.

What's next

In the coming weeks, Golmohammadi is expected to begin his role and implement strategies for Team Omid. His steps will be important to prepare the players for the upcoming Olympic qualifications. Having a proper program at the youth level will provide the foundation for a more successful future of football in Iran.
