Why it matters

Donyell Malen's performance at AS Roma has given a big boost to their success in Serie A, where they are currently at the top. His 21 goals and 4 assists in 26 games show his ability as an effective striker, which has emphasized his value in the transfer market. These types of midfield signings are essential to building a strong team in the league.

Key Points

• Gasperini praised: 'Aston Villa did not understand.
• Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of AS Roma, expressed his delight at Donyell Malen's current form—21 goals and 4 assists in 26 games since his arrival in January—and said Aston Villa 'misunderstood' the player's true strength.
• Gasperini lyric: 'Aston Villa begreep de kracht van Donyell Malen niet'.

Gian Piero Gasperini, coach of AS Roma, once again paid tribute to Donyell Malen after the player's remarkable start in Serie A. Gasperini revealed at the Festival dello Sport in Trento that Malen's arrival in January had opened up a new dimension to the team's attack. According to the record, since Malen's move to AS Roma he has played 26 official matches and contributed 21 goals and four assists — numbers that proved his lethality inside the penalty area. Roma are currently leading the Serie A table, and Malen has played a huge role in the team's process towards the top of the league. Gasperini explained that opportunity in the transfer market sometimes changes a club's plans. "Sometimes an unexpected market opportunity can change your plans forever," said Gasperini. "We were looking at a number of names for the position, until we heard that Aston Villa were going to sell Donyell." He added: "It was a tactical consideration. Villa misunderstood Malen."

The coach also emphasized that Malen's personal desire to be the center of the attack—returning as a true striker—is the reason why his courage and intelligence in front of the goal have been shown more. "Donyell would love to be a striker again," Gasperini said. "And I've always thought that's where he'll shine the most. It must be because he's so effective inside the box. I have to admit that I didn't expect this impressive statistic." Gasperini even shared an amusing anecdote about his conversation with Malen. He cited Gonzalo Higuaín's previous record of 36 goals in a season for Napoli as an example of the lofty mark that could be reached — and even joked that he would be happy if Malen reached 30 goals. Malen is currently out of the Netherlands (Oranje) squad for the interland due to injury, so the player is focusing on recovery to get back into the club's schedule. His rapid rise in form since the transfer gives Roma hope and shows the value of the right tactical fit in running a team. As the league continues and important matches approach, it is clear that Malen is one of the keys that will stop the opponents and can bring the title for Roma. Malen's achievements could spark interest from other Serie A clubs in the future, especially in the upcoming summer transfer window.
