Context

Michael Carrick, who has been the coach of Manchester United, has experienced challenges in his leadership, especially in recent defeats. His relationship with the players, particularly Bruno Fernandes, seems to be a source of conflict, hindering harmony within the team. These issues put his position at risk, prompting Carragher to call for his immediate departure.

Why it matters

Manchester United's defeat at Bournemouth highlighted deep problems within the team, according to Jamie Carragher. His call for Michael Carrick to be sacked shows the need for a change in the club's leadership, which could affect their season outlook in the Premier League. Internal discipline issues, such as the behavior of Bruno Fernandes, add to the tension in the team, hindering their progress.

Key Points

• Jamie Carragher, called for Carrick to be released immediately.
• Jamie Carragher has explained that Manchester United's dismal result against Bournemouth reflects a problem with the whole team and is not simply a matter of tactics or a short-term dip in form.
• Carragher: 'I don't care about Carrick anymore'.

Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool central defender, has called on Manchester United's management to immediately relieve Michael Carrick of his responsibility as head coach after the team's agonizing 0-3 defeat against Bournemouth. Carragher released this statement following Manchester United's deteriorating form and continued string of poor results. According to Carragher, what Man United is suffering from is not simply a matter of a tactical problem or a momentary slowdown, but a sign that there is a deeper problem with their collective game and direction as a team. Carragher added that it seems Carrick himself is no longer ready to continue in his position and is no longer motivated to work with the current group of players. He said that it is right that Carrick should be given the freedom and dignity to leave his post as soon as possible, which could open up new opportunities for the club and Carrick.

Carragher also criticized the behavior of some players such as Bruno Fernandes, who openly questioned their coach's tactics after the defeat in Como. Carragher pointed out that this is not showing respect to Carrick's leadership, especially since he himself helped Fernandes improve his form last season. The former Liverpool player also reminded that it is difficult to have a stable team if the key players themselves are not compliant and continues to reveal the tension and turmoil within the club. Carrick's successes have been in line since he was replaced by Ruben Amorim midway through the 2025-2026 season. Under his leadership, good progress was restored and Man United got the ticket for the Champions League so he became the official coach. However, when 2026-2027 arrived, the quality and results of the team fell again, while the conflict between the coach and the veteran players surfaced. After the defeat against Bournemouth, although Carrick remained steadfast in his media presence, many noted his long stare and farewell to the Old Trafford fans after the match — as if this was in preparation for his departure. Some of the supporters even praised him, even though they scolded the players and management for the terrible game. In the end, Gary Neville, Carrick's former teammate, also mentioned that it is not unlikely that the club will change a new coach in the near future and that Carrick will leave the role as head coach.

What's next

In the current situation, one can expect the rapid progress of the management of Manchester United towards a new coach. The decision to let go of Carrick could give the team a new impetus, which is needed to improve their performance in the Premier League. Otherwise, continued defeats could cause a deeper crisis within the club and their fans.
