Liverpool face a serious challenge in organizing their first team as June 2027 approaches — many contracts expire on the same date and decisions need to be made about extending or swapping a number of key positions. According to the latest report, one of the first things that new sporting director Julian Ward is focusing on is the future of Virgil van Dijk. It's no secret that Van Dijk has been one of Liverpool's most important players in recent years. After Jordan Henderson left, the Dutch center-back became a pillar of the defense and a leader in the dressing room. In the current season, the report notes that Van Dijk, 35, has completed the full 90 minutes in each of Liverpool's five Premier League games and was also involved in the team's win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League — testament to the confidence in his long-term ability and physical condition.

The Reds hope to keep him longer. Football Insider reports that Liverpool are open to the possibility of handing Van Dijk a new contract if his impressive performances continue. Although the player's current contract expires next summer, there are no immediate concerns at the club about his condition—especially since Andoni Iraola still considers him a “crucial” part of the first team's plans for the season. There are gaps Liverpool need to address, including left back, central midfield and even right winger — positions that may need an upgrade to become serious title contenders again. Despite this, it is clear that Van Dijk's influence and talent will be difficult to replace at the moment. He has also once expressed his desire to play for his country until Euro 2028 and believes he can maintain a high level even into his late 30s, reportedly due to peaking later in his career. As Ward and the board review the squad's overall record and upcoming transfer decisions, there is no denying that the focus on Van Dijk and other veteran players will be central to shaping Liverpool's future. There are likely new names to enter the shortlist in the coming months, including young talents such as Giovanni Leoni who could be part of the long-term planning. But in the current situation, it seems the most obvious step for the Reds is to monitor Van Dijk's performance first and make a decision based on his consistent contribution to the team.

What's next

Julian Ward is expected to assess Van Dijk's current form and his contribution to the team before making a decision on a possible new contract. If his good form continues, Liverpool could offer an extension to his current contract which expires next summer. The next few weeks will be critical for Van Dijk's future at Liverpool.
