Lyon did not miss the opportunity in front of their own supporters after defeating Sparta Prague, 3-0, in the second leg of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League on 11 August 2026 at the Groupama Stadium. As a result, the French pocketed a total of 4-2 on aggregate and progressed to the play-off round of the competition. The game dictated quickly for Lyon. In the 20th minute, Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring after finding a gap in Sparta's defense. The home side went even further in the 34th minute, when Sparta defender Adam Shevinsky received a straight red card. Numerical advantage gave Lyon more control over rhythm and territory, while the visitors were forced to change strategy to close holes at the back. Entering the second half, Lyon's pressure did not let up. In the 66th minute, fullback Ainsley Maitland-Niles rose to the attack and headed home a neat build-up to double the lead, 2-0. Just seven minutes later, Tyler Morton sealed the win in the 73rd with a clean layup that made the final score, 3-0.

This explosion of offense is important for Lyon especially since they are coming off a 1-2 loss in the first leg in Prague. Across the two games, Lyon showed defensive discipline and tenacity in creating chances—elements further accentuated by the red card that weakened Sparta. Under the pressure of the continental qualifiers, the team overcame the situation and settled the series well. Because of this, Lyon will now look forward to their opponents in the play-off round, the last step before the group stage of the Champions League for the season 2026/27. For fans, it was a clear indication that the French club was ready to compete with the bigger names in Europe. This campaign is also a reminder that the current defending champions of the Champions League are Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Arsenal in the 2025/26 final (1-1, 4-3 on penalties). Right now, Lyon have the momentum—their attacking form is clear and the foundation solid at the back—as they look to complete qualification and advance to the group stage where the depth and quality of a European team is truly measured.
