Why it matters

The contract renewals of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk have a major impact on Liverpool's future as a Premier League club. Their experience and ability are vital to the team's quest to return to the top of Premier League football. The continued presence of players like Alisson and Van Dijk gives confidence and stability to the Reds' defence.

Key Points

• Good sign at Anfield: Big step by.
• Liverpool are looking at renewing the contracts of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.
• "Bodes well": Liverpool take gigantic step towards Alisson and Van Dijk contract renewals.

There are big decisions on the table at Liverpool regarding the future of two pillars of their team. The contracts of Alisson Becker (34) and Virgil van Dijk (35) are set to expire at the end of the 2026/27 season, and according to a report by the Liverpool Echo, there are "good signs" in favor of talks over their new deals. Alisson, the long-time first-choice goalkeeper at Anfield, was extended an extra 12 months last summer through a clause in his contract. Although he was previously linked with interest from Juventus, Liverpool opted to keep the Brazilian shot-stopper—a decision that confirmed he is still integral to the team's system and ambitions. Alisson remains central to the Reds' defense and recently highlighted his value with another clean and solid performance. As for Van Dijk, his level of play as Liverpool's captain continues to be high even though he is approaching his mid-30s. The Dutch defender has been linked with a number of European giants such as Real Madrid and Juventus, but it would clearly be a big loss if a leader and elite centre-back is allowed to leave for free when the final year of his contract comes to an end. Beyond the on-field impact, Van Dijk's role is critical in shaping the next generation in defense—a continuity the club will want to ensure if they can sort out his contract situation early.

The pulse at Anfield has become more positive after Fenway Sports Group reappointed Julian Ward as sporting director. Ward is known for his expertise in the sensitive negotiation of contracts; in 2022, he flew to Mykonos to complete Mohamed Salah's extension—a successful precedent highlighted by the Liverpool Echo as why his return "bodes well" for the Alisson and Van Dijk affair. According to the report, even before confirming any plans for the coming January, Ward should put the situation of Van Dijk and Alisson at the top of his list. For Liverpool, an early resolution to the two cornerstones of their spine—goalkeeper and centre-back—will give the club project certainty amid competition in the Premier League and Europe, and allow attention to be focused on other squad needs. For now, it's clear that the recruitment and contract machine at Anfield is back into gear. While supporters look forward to formal talks, Ward's track record and Alisson and Van Dijk's clear value to the team suggest there are strong grounds for hope that they will continue their stay on Merseyside.

What's next

It is expected that talks for a new agreement will begin soon, especially after the reassignment of Julian Ward. His track record in negotiations has given Liverpool fans hope that the two pillars of their team can be retained. If the contracts work out, Liverpool could see a more solid defense in the coming Premier League seasons.
