Why it matters

AS Roma's win against Cagliari is important not only for their points but also for their position in Serie A. The presence of Donyell Malen as the top scorer brings additional pressure on the opponents and shows the depth of their attack. Such results are critical to their season outlook, especially in the quest to win the Serie A title.

Key Points

• Malen, as a substitute, delivered victory to Rome and again.
• Donyell Malen scored the winner for Roma as a super-sub against Cagliari and once again tied for first place in scoring in Serie A.
• Invaller Malen helpt Roma aan zege en is again topscorer van Serie A.

Donyell Malen again felt at the most important moment. He came on as a substitute and scored in the closing stages to seal AS Roma's victory over Cagliari, a result that not only gave the Giallorossi three points but also returned Malen to the top of the Serie A scorers' charts. He is once again level with AC Monza's Gustavo Varela and Frosinone's Antonio Raimondo in the race for the crown of Italy's top goalscorer. Cagliari immediately took the lead within the first ten minutes after M'Bala Nzola converted a penalty kick. Roma were quick to respond: just five minutes later wingback Emanuele Lulli found perfect timing to equalize with a clean header. The Roma went even further six minutes later, when Lulli also laid a pass for Niccolò Pisilli to finish cleanly for 2-1. The twist of the story happened in the second episode. Cagliari leveled through Daniel Maldini, who curled in with his left foot to make it 2-2 and temporarily kill the home team's spirits. But Roma did not let the momentum go. The hosts struck again when Daniele Ghilardi fed the perfect ball for Rodrigo Mora, who nodded in a header to make it 3-2 and restore the lead.

That's when Malen entered to finish off the guest. Cagliari made a mistake in the middle—a dramatic turnover that Roma didn't miss. Moments later, Malen got a chance and although it took two shots, he also found the back of the net for the surefire goal of the night. His score snuffed out any Cagliari comeback attempt and sealed Roma's win. Apart from the importance of the result in Roma's campaign, it is also a big point for Malen's personal fight in the scoring charts. With this last goal, he once again shared the first place among the top scorers in Serie A, equal to Gustavo Varela (AC Monza) and Antonio Raimondo (Frosinone). In the wider league picture, Lazio first secured a win against Sassuolo to climb to the top of the standings this matchday, and Roma followed that up with a win at home to Cagliari. In the end, Malen showed the value of a sharp substitute: presence, timing and courage in front of goal. As the race for the scoring crown heats up and the competition at the top of the table tightens, this kind of contribution from the bench could be the difference for Roma—and for Malen in his ambition to finish the season as Italy's top scorer.

What's next

In the next few games, it is expected that Donyell Malen will continue to be important in the development of Roma's attack. Their next match will be an opportunity to prove their mettle against other Serie A clubs. The momentum from this win could give the team confidence as the next league matches approach.
