• Barcelona officially included 19-year-old Xavi Espart in the first team after winning the trust of coach Hansi Flick and the sporting management in the pre-season, according to Mundo Deportivo.
• Xavi Espart's versatility earns Barcelona first-team promotion.

Barcelona have promoted 19-year-old defender Xavi Espart from the academy to the first team after he left a strong impression in the preparatory phase, reports Mundo Deportivo. The club's management and coach Hansi Flick were unanimous in their praise of Espart, and it was confirmed that the youngster's promotion was also approved by sporting director Deco after seeing his mature movements and discipline in training and pre-season games. Espart has been given confidence in the opening campaign in La Liga, when he started against Elche as a left-back wearing the No. 36. The champions ended the night with an emphatic 5-0 win, and the young academy product's smart and calm defense was part of that. In recognition of his promotion, his number will be moved to No. 12 for La Liga matches.

One of the main reasons for Espart's rapid growth is its versatility. According to the evaluation of the coaching staff, he can play the role of right defender and left defender, and can also assume the role of the defensive center and the middle row. In modern football where rotation and quick adaptation to the situation are important, having a player with positional breadth like Espart—ready to support the defense or provide balance in the middle depending on the need of the match—is a big deal for Flick. Not only in the tactical aspect did he look up; those inside the club noted that his professionalism was also remarkable—from the way he prepared, following instructions, to being calm under pressure. With a team known for developing their own talent from La Masia, this promotion is a clear indication of Barcelona's confidence in Espart's potential as he begins his first-team career. For Barcelona, the promotion of a youngster like Espart provides depth and competition in the back and center positions. It's also a strategic move to keep the team energized throughout the league season—where fatigue, suspensions, and situations that require quick formation changes are inevitable. For now, Espart is focused on continuing to prove himself, adapting to the rhythm of senior football, and helping bring solid minutes to Barcelona's defense and midfield. His new number No. 12 symbolizes a new phase—and the confidence that comes with it—after a remarkable La Liga debut against Elche.

What's next

In his move to No. 12 shirt, Espart is expected to be a key part of Barcelona's next matches in La Liga. His ability to play in different positions will allow Flick to have more tactical options in his lineup. As the season continues, the next matches will be important to test Espart's ability and stamina in the higher level of La Liga football.
