Context

Real Sociedad have the experience of reaching the final of the Txapela, emphasizing their history in La Liga football. Despite having won this competition once, this match was an opportunity to show their strength and determination in front of their rivals Athletic Club.

Why it matters

The Euskal Herria Txapela derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club is not just a pre-season friendly but an important battle rooted in the deep rivalry between the two La Liga clubs. Despite the shortfalls in the line-up caused by the FIFA international break, this match gives the youth and non-regular starters a chance to showcase their skills. The clash highlights the importance of local football in the Basque region and its supporters.

Key Points

• Matarazzo and Terzic, Face Off for the First Time.
• Real Sociedad and Athletic Club are set to face off in a heated Euskal Herria Txapela derby in Anoeta.
• La Real, a por la txapela en el primer cara a cara entre Matarazzo y Terzic.

The heat of a derby can't be beat, especially if Real Sociedad and Athletic Club face Anoeta for the Euskal Herria Txapela title. Even though this is just a pre-season friendly competition, the rivalry between the two teams and their supporters runs deep. This is not just an exhibition match—it is still considered a real battle for the honor of Basque football. A good turnout is expected at Anoeta as it is open free to Real Sociedad members. However, the current international break has had a big impact on the line-up of both teams: nine Real Sociedad players and five Athletic players are absent due to the call-up to the national team. Because of this, it is expected that more will be given a chance to show off from the youngsters and non-regular starters. This will also be the first time that coaches Pellegrino Matarazzo of Real Sociedad and Edin Terzic of Athletic Club, who have previously played for Bundesliga teams, will meet in the region. This clash serves as a prelude to their highly anticipated official derby in November. As added history, the match will also serve as a tribute to Mikel Etxarri, an important personality in the history of Basque football. Real Sociedad have the most experience in reaching the Txapela final—this is their seventh time. But they have only served as champions once, which happened at the same Anoeta in 2020 against Osasuna. Meanwhile, Athletic won three, the same as Osasuna. Despite the absences, Terzic is trying to build a competitive team. Among the key players he can use are Vivian, Yeray, Canales, Gerenabarrena, Jauregizar, Berenguer, Iñaki and Guruzeta. On the Real Sociedad side, except for the eight big names who are on national team duty, Zubeldia and Odriozola are also absent due to injury. It's a big question how many minutes Matarazzo will get in regular matches against the youngsters—especially considering some young players like Unax Ayo are also being looked at to rest or be able to play. In midfield, Gorrotxategi is expected to play a bigger role while Zakharyan is expected to be key in the middle. On offense, Matarazzo can try Guedes and Barrenetxea as the main striker, especially having to rest Carrera for the Sanse match on Sunday. Marín is also likely to make a debut appearance at right wing. This derby highlights not only the strength of the Basque rivalry, but also the depth of talent between Real Sociedad and Athletic Club—regardless of the line-up the two sides field, the clash is sure to be full of heat and energy. It's a prelude to bigger fights in the coming months.

What's next

The match at Anoeta is expected to be lively, with free entry for Real Sociedad members, which is sure to bring more supporters. The first focus of coaches Matarazzo and Terzic will be important in their season outlook, especially as it is a prelude to the official derby in November. Moreover, the match will be a tribute to Mikel Etxarri, who has made a great contribution to the history of Basque football.
