The wind is changing for Mathijs Tielemans after a difficult spell at Excelsior in the Eredivisie. The 24-year-old midfielder, once touted as one of PSV's young talents, is now being targeted by Denmark's Aarhus BK, and is about to open a new phase in his career. After training and progressing through PSV's youth academy, Tielemans left Eindhoven in 2023 to seek better opportunities. From PSV, he first went through Vitesse before moving on to Excelsior. With the help of his contribution, Excelsior were among the new entrants to the Eredivisie since their promotion. But Tielemans also passed the test, because despite his team's success he was gradually placed behind other players when it came to playing time in Kralingen, he was no longer the center of the game and the coaching staff's main choice in midfield.

As a result, Tielemans and Excelsior's management looked for a new direction, and talks paid off when Aalborg BK, one of the prominent teams from the Danish First Division (Denmark's 1st tier), expressed serious interest. So far, the two clubs have almost reached an agreement on the details of the transfer. If the deal is signed immediately, expect Tielemans' first international club campaign in Denmark to become official. This possible move would give Tielemans the chance to prove his mettle once again, and serve as a fresh start after a limited year in the Eredivisie. For Aalborg BK, Tielemans' experience from the Netherlands, known for its fast and technical football, will be a big help. If the transfer is completed, Tielemans is expected to be molded into an integral part of the Danish club's midfield. Many Dutch players are also trying to expand their career outside the country where the competition in the Eredivisie is high. This move by Tielemans reflects the young player's desire to seek wider opportunities and broaden their experience in European football. Fans will be waiting to see if this move pans out and how he adjusts to the new league and culture.

What's next

It is hoped that the agreement between Excelsior and Aalborg BK will be finalized soon. If the transfer goes through, Tielemans will be seen playing in the Danish First Division, which will be his first international club stint. This move could be the beginning of a new phase in his career, where he will have a greater opportunity to show his talent in a new environment.
