Nottingham Forest won against Bayer Leverkusen, 2-1, in a friendly match on 12 August 2026, thanks to Arnaud Kalimuendo's dramatic last-minute goal. Forest took an early lead when Dan Ndoye scored in the 4th minute, before the German side hit back through Patrik Schick in the 33rd. In the end, Kalimuendo was the difference, defining the victory of the “Tricky Trees” in the 90th minute itself. The match started with a strong rhythm from the home side, with Forest taking advantage of the first opportunity in the attack for a quick 1-0. Bayer Leverkusen did not give up and gradually found time in the middle, so Schick tied it before the end of the first half. Despite a balanced and thorough exchange, both sides' efforts in the second period did not immediately bear fruit until Kalimuendo drew the last pinch in regulation time to win the match for Nottingham. Although a practical match, the result is important for the confidence of Forest as they attempt to build on their form ahead of the new campaign. Last season in the Premier League (2025/26), Nottingham Forest finished in 16th place with 44 points from 38 games—a reminder that they need to step up their performance for a safer mid-table finish. At the top of the table, Arsenal are the Premier League champions with 85 points.

As for Leverkusen, it was also a tough test against the English team. From the 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign where they finished in 6th place with 59 points, the "Werkself" are clearly aiming to stay competitive in Germany and Europe. In Germany, Bayern Munich won the championship last season after collecting 89 points. All in all, Forest showed resilience to the end and an ability to deal with pressure, while Leverkusen proved they have the weapons to match the intense pressure of strong opponents. More importantly, this late-minute victory provides Nottingham with a valuable morale boost and a lesson in handling critical situations—elements that often factor into measurable matches once the official season begins. For Leverkusen, the mistake that opened the door at the last moment is likely to be the focus of their adjustment and refinement of the game in the coming weeks. Message of the night: early build-up, dogged chasing and sheer grit at the end—a classic formula of pre-season football that led to a result in Nottingham Forest's favour.

What's next

After the win, Nottingham Forest are expected to continue their preparations for the new Premier League season. The next matches will be important to strengthen their tactics and organization within the team. The results in the upcoming games will affect their confidence and performance in the league, especially as they try to improve from last season when they finished in 16th place.
