The name of Robert Maaskant, who memorably led Wisła Kraków to the Polish league title, is back in the news in the world of international football after he was appointed as the new national team coach of Tuvalu. According to the report, Maaskant has signed a one-year contract with the small country of around 11,000, which is currently not a member of FIFA. Maaskant's expertise in Wisła Kraków goes back to memory: he lasted in the team for 55 matches, and in his first season won the league title. One of his goals was to bring home a place in the UEFA Champions League; in the qualifiers, Wisła defeated Skonto Riga and Liteks Łowecz before falling behind and losing to APOEL Nicosia in the final stage. The defeat against APOEL and the consequences in the Europa League was part of the beginning of his departure from Kraków in November 2011. Since then, Maaskant's career has had challenges; this included his most recent role at Helmond Sport, which he managed in 14 games in 2025 and recorded two wins. Now, Maaskant will face a unique challenge in a region that the Dutch have long helped to develop football. The report noted that the appointment took place shortly before Tuvalu was expected to become a full member of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC). This is a critical moment for the rise of football in the said country and a possible step towards participation in wider international competitions in the future.

The first big test for Maaskant as the Tuvalu national team is the Puchar Czterech Narodów — a four-nation tournament to be held in New Zealand in January 2027. The competition includes Tuvalu, Tonga, Kiribati, and the Cook Islands. The tournament is considered a bit of a landmark for Tuvalu, which will give the team an opportunity to test its strategy, team building, and capacity against other countries in the region. Before he is officially introduced to Tuvalu supporters, Maaskant is scheduled to hold a press conference on November 4th at the Atik Stadium in Roosendaal in the Netherlands. According to the report, here he will explain his plan for the team and how his experience from Europe will be adapted to the context of Polynesia. Maaskant's move is an unusual career move: from the stages of European club football to a micro-nation aiming to rise to regional competition. For Tuvalu, hiring a coach with experience in European competitions is clearly part of a larger strategy to develop their football infrastructure and capabilities before they eventually become members of the OFC and, possibly, FIFA in the future.
