At an altitude of almost 4,000 meters in La Paz, Bolivia, São Paulo and Bolívar tied 1-1 this Tuesday (11) in the first leg of the round of 16 of the 2026 Conmebol Copa Sudamericana. Tricolor Paulista showed good organization and took the lead through Arboleda in the first half of the match. Bolívar soon broke through São Paulo's defense and equalized with a long shot — the kind of goal that usually comes up against high ground because of the change in weight and flight of the ball. The atmosphere and conditions in La Paz once again provided a big challenge for the visiting team. Also in this match, Conmebol implemented some rules that were part of the change for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: goalkeepers were given only five seconds to restart from the goal kick. Colombian referee Wilmar Roldán strictly enforced this new rule, causing anger and backlash from São Paulo players and supporters.

At 1-1, the math for progression was clear — São Paulo needed to win the second leg in Morumbi if they were to advance to the quarterfinals of the Sudamericana. The decision will be determined if the second leg also ends in a draw through a penalty shootout. The return leg is set for Tuesday (18) night, 21:30 Brasília time, in Morumbi. Before that return, a local league challenge awaits: São Paulo will host Coritiba in Morumbi in the 23rd round of the Brasileirão, kicking off at 21:00 Brasília time. The mixed schedule of Sudamericana and Brasileirão will put an emphasis on the outcome of the next few weeks for São Paulo. The tie in La Paz featured elements of both tactical and physical challenge — organized defense by São Paulo, and aggressive attack by Bolívar made advantageous by the sporting conditions. It is clear that progress in the Sudamericana depends on São Paulo's ability to adapt at home to Morumbi and put the pressure on for a win in the second leg.
