Serie B: Ascoli-Avellino — 'Del Duca' on fire, will try

According to Tuttomercatoweb.

Context

Ascoli, as a Serie B club, showed a positive start to their campaign, with victories against well-known teams such as Hellas Verona and Benevento. On the other hand, Avellino, led by Alessandro Nesta, showed the ability to recover from an early defeat and established a solid defense, which gave them a good chance in the next matches.

Why it matters

The match between Ascoli and Avellino is important not only for the current standings but also for their season outlook in Serie B. They both have seven points and the result of the match could change their momentum in the league. Ascoli's local support in 'Del Duca' could be the key to their victory against the Lupis of Avellino.

Key Points

• Serie B: Ascoli-Avellino — 'Del Duca' on fire, will try.
• Ascoli and Avellino, both with seven points, will battle it out in an intensive night at 'Del Duca' — fanbase strength and defensive problems will be key.
• Serie B, Ascoli-Avellino: al "Del Duca" la bolgia marchigiana testa la marcia dei lupi irpini.

Ascoli and Avellino will clash tonight at 'Del Duca' for the fifth consecutive game of Serie B, in a duel promised by the announcer as very hot and without a clear favourite. As the underlying article notes, both have a "sette punti in classifica" — seven points — and an identical rulolino: two victories, two draws and a crushing defeat, a strange symmetry that adds comfort to the serious stakes of the clash. For coach Francesco Tomei's Ascoli, the start of the campaign was positive: as neopromossi, they already scored against Hellas Verona and Benevento and also recorded a draw against Carrarese before the first defeat of the league, 1-0 at Padova. Local support is one of the team's big weapons — citing the new vitality of the Curva Sud and the presence of around 10,000 season-ticket holders pushing "Del Duca" into a real bolgia for the bianconeri. On the cousin side, the club's directive is clear: secure a stay in Serie B and build the campaign with a calm from relegation fears. But Alessandro Nesta's Avellino should not be underestimated. After a heavy start losing to Arezzo (2-1), the Lupis showed a strong reaction: wins against Vicenza (3-0) and Modena (1-0) and a solid 1-1 against Palermo. The report criticized the rebuilding of defensive solidity: after two goals conceded in the first game, there were two clean sheets in the next three games. Up front, Raffaele Russo and Michele Besaggio shined in attack with both scoring two goals at the start of the campaign.

Head-to-head history: the two teams haven't met in nine years—meeting again in 2017/18 with both ending 1-1—and overall head-to-head, Ascoli dominates with 25 wins to Avellino's 17 and 19 draws. Problems with the deep lines are part of the pre-match narrative: for Ascoli, the big loss is captain Manuel Alagna, who is out after tearing the ligament crociato and is only expected to return in 2027 after a long rehabilitation. At the other end, Nesta is dealing with multiple losses in defense due to the forfeits of Simic, Cancellotti and the long-injured Fila. Avellino has hope for the reunion of Palmiero and Favilli who are gradually returning to condition. The tactical battle will play out between the aggressive force of the stadium and the ability of the coaches to fix the deficit at the back. For Ascoli, home support and the ambition to stay at the top of the table are big things; for Avellino, continuing the momentum and promoting a strong defense is important. There is no clear favourite—a perfect combination for a hot Serie B night at 'Del Duca'.

What's next

After the match, Ascoli will continue their quest to get the necessary points to stay on top of the standings in Serie B. Avellino, on the other hand, are expected to continue their good run after their previous successes. The next matches will be important for both teams to maintain their position and avoid the dangers of relegation.
