His performance inspired his teammates and solidified their position at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

Why it matters

Vietnam's win over Pakistan in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 highlighted their ability to bounce back from defeat and claim victory in a tight match. Nguyễn Đình Bắc's performance as a substitute showed the depth of their squad, which is crucial to their season outlook in the tournament. This win gave Vietnam momentum as the next matches in the competition approached.

Key Points

• Solano, Coach of Pakistan: "He changed the course of the game.
• In the final match of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, coach Nolberto Solano of Pakistan acknowledged the great impact of substitute Nguyễn Đình Bắc, who led Vietnam to come back to defeat Pakistan with a score of 4-2.
• HLV Pakistan: 'Đình Bắc thay dại trần lại'.

Pakistan's coach Nolberto Solano admitted that they couldn't match Vietnam's tempo in the second period, with the introduction of Nguyễn Đình Bắc completely changing the fate of the match. This took place in the final stage of the group stage of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 held at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta. Solano said in the post-match press conference that "Pakistan allowed Vietnam to penetrate their right side," causing several mistakes that resulted in the opponent's goals. Although Pakistan are ranked only 198 in the world (almost 100 places lower than Vietnam), they were surprised when Mohid Ullah scored in the 32nd minute to take the lead before half-time. When the second half arrived, Pakistan lost rhythm and defense, causing Vietnam to be more creative and aggressive. It resulted in goals by Nguyễn Hai Long and Nguyễn Hoàng Đức that gave the win. Đình Bắc, who was relieved in the second half along with Phan Tuấn Tài, delivered crucial assists, including Williams Minh Hoàng's 4-2 in favor of Vietnam. Before this, he also equalized and scored their last goal in the match.

Solano also shared that he was not sure of the correct pronunciation of Đình Bắc's name, but he clearly recognized the impact of this player, who he said caused a lot of problems on the side of Pakistan's defense. In the previous matches, Đình Bắc was usually a starter for Vietnam, but their coach decided to make him a substitute this game, perhaps in preparation in case they reach the final matches or finals. Although Pakistan showed good control of pressing and solid defense in the first half, they could not withstand Vietnam's fast game and repeated attacks. "When we started to raise the defense line, the pressure gradually eased and the space for Vietnam increased," said Solano. Solano also emphasized the strength of the Vietnamese squad and considered it one of the strong teams in ASEAN. However, Vietnam finished second in the group and will face Malaysia for third place, while Indonesia and Thailand will battle it out for the championship. This victory is of great significance for Vietnam as it will serve as their preparation for a tougher international tournament, especially as the World Cup 2026 qualifiers approach. Meanwhile, this is also a big lesson for Pakistan who need to expand their tactical depth and stamina to compete with the top teams in the region.

What's next

In their next match at the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, Vietnam are expected to continue their good run, especially with the development of their attack with the help of Đình Bắc. The lessons learned from this fight will help them to improve their defense and attack against stronger opponents. This victory gave them the confidence to achieve a higher ranking in the tournament.
