Venezia FC have officially sold Issa Doumbia to Sporting Clube de Portugal in a deal worth €20 million, including an additional €6 million in the form of bonuses. According to Venezia's statement, the agreement for the full transfer of the central player has been formally concluded, after he became one of the most coveted teams in Italy over the past year. Since January, Lazio have tried to sign Doumbia with an offer of €14 million. Venezia chose not to sell then to push their goal of a return to Serie A. By June, interest emerged from Fiorentina and Roma, but an offer of €20 million with a €6 million bonus from Sporting finally brought Doumbia away from Italy and to Lisbon. Doumbia arrived at Venezia at the start of the 2024/25 season and recorded a total of 63 games in orange-green. In an impressive 2025/26 campaign, he recorded 10 goals and 6 assists—all in that period—which further increased his market value. This week, he also grabbed his first Champions League goal for Sporting, although some Portuguese newspapers did not consider his overall performance in such a match extraordinary.

His agent, Cheikh Fall, also shared the reason for choosing Lisbon as his next destination. He said the environment at Sporting is perfect for player development. He also described Doumbia's current role—one of two central defenders—that although it's not his most comfortable position, he plays it well. Fall added, this role is helpful for Doumbia's game to be more complete and he can be used in various tasks in the middle. For Sporting, Doumbia's arrival will add strength to their ranks as they compete in the local league and in Europe. For Venezia, Doumbia made a big impact over two seasons, before developing into one of the most promising young midfielders to come through their system. And while signing the new chapter of his career, there is also a personal reason to celebrate: Doumbia turns 23 today. All in all, Sporting has clearly moved to acquire a versatile player in the middle—with goal and assist production, experience at a high level, and confidence in adapting to different roles in the midfield line. A move that sends a clear message: the people of Lisbon are serious about strengthening their competitiveness in Portugal and on the continent.

What's next

Now that Doumbia is part of Sporting, his progress is expected to continue in the Primeira Liga. His ability to adapt to the new environment and game system will be key to his success. Under the leadership of his new coach, we may see more opportunities for him to show his skills in the next matches, especially in the Champions League.
