Stefano Pioli's sudden appearance in the city of Naples has been the talk of Italian football circles this week, a day before Napoli's crucial match against Roma in Serie A. According to reports from TuttoMercatoWeb, the former Milan and Fiorentina coach – currently without a team – was spotted walking along the famous seafront of Mergellina this Friday, enjoying the sunny weather. Although speculation quickly arose about the real reason for Pioli's visit, reports in Italy quickly clarified that it had nothing to do with the coach's position at Napoli. Massimiliano Allegri is still the confident boss of the club, even if the state of the team is hotly debated due to their unusual start to this Serie A season. The Partenopei, who are now ninth in the Serie A standings after picking up 10 points from seven games – their worst start in 17 years – will be gearing up for a tough third-placed Roma clash. The rumblings got even louder when they lost at Venezia (0-1) last week, prompting calls for a change.

However, Napoli bounced back on Tuesday with a 4-3 win against Bodø/Glimt in the Champions League, giving some hope and bringing positive energy to the camp. A win against Roma will certainly strengthen Allegri's position and stop criticism of his leadership. Since lifting the Scudetto with Milan in 2022, no team has touched Pioli after he left Fiorentina. Because of this, it was normal for the conversation to heat up regarding his visit to Naples, where he remains one of the most respected coaches in Italian football. While there has been no official word regarding the possibility of a move, expect speculation to continue until Napoli's coaching issue is resolved. These scenes prove that in the world of football, every move of famous personalities carries with it the intrigue of the entire industry. Every match is even more crucial now in the middle of the active trend of Serie A.

What's next

In their match against Roma, Napoli will have to show their best to get the necessary points and improve their position in the Serie A standings. A victory in this match will not only help the morale of the team but also give Allegri some relief from the critics. Their previous Champions League victory against Bodø/Glimt gave some hope, but the real challenge will be facing a resilient Roma.
