Emotion is in the air again in Rome. As José Mourinho prepares to return to the Stadio Olimpico as Real Madrid coach on Wednesday night, a poignant mural has appeared a few steps from the home of the Giallorossi—an offering from Roman street artist Drugi for "Special One." The picture is simple, but strikes the hearts of Romanists. Mourinho can be seen on his knees, clutching a Roma scarf. In his other hand, he held the scarf of a boy dressed in yellow and red—hugging the Conference League trophy. A scene that instantly harks back to the unforgettable night in Tirana, when Roma finally broke the drought in Europe and lifted the first European trophy in the club's history. Along with the work, Drugi shared on social media a message that resonated with the entire city: "Let's hold hands at the top of Europe. In one night, we'll forget love, but we'll never forget who we are." Short but powerful words that bridge the gap between the coach, the fans, and the collective memory of a night that changed Roma's identity on the continent.

For the Romanistas, Mourinho opened a new chapter: from shaping a fighting culture, to reaching two consecutive European finals and the trophy brought home from Tirana. So even though he's on the other bench back at the Olimpico, the message of the mural is clear—that hand, holding the hand of the boy who represents the future of Rome, will remain stamped on the heart of the city. There is no directly defined competition in this return, but the weight of opportunity is enough: Real Madrid on one side, Roma on the other, and Mourinho at the heart of the sentiment returning to the place where his name was repeatedly shouted. In the context of European football, it's rare to see such an open-hearted tribute to a coach who is now an opponent—testament to the unique relationship he developed with the tifosi. In the end, it's not just about a mural. It's a reminder of how football changes cities and communities—how a trophy, a shout in the stadium, and a coach who gave new hope can become part of the collective memory. Mourinho will return to the Olimpico as Real Madrid's coach on Wednesday, but according to the message etched on the wall: love's pause is short-lived—the identity they built back then will never be forgotten.

What's next

On Wednesday, the Stadio Olimpico is expected to be filled with emotion as Mourinho returns to his former home, but with the Real Madrid side. This match is not just a simple game, but an opportunity for Romanistas to repeat their success in the Conference League. Fans will surely carry memories of their coach and his contribution to their history.
