Report: Newcastle United eyeing Joao Palhinha

According to Sports.

Context

Joao Palhinha is known as one of the best ball-winners in the Premier League, capable of providing protection to the defense and thwarting the opponent's attacks. On the other hand, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has extensive experience at the highest level of football, providing leadership and control in the central part of the game. Both players could be an integral part of Newcastle's plan for their player development and long-term success.

Why it matters

Newcastle United's targeting of Joao Palhinha and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg shows their intention to strengthen the midfield during the summer transfer window. Having experienced midfielders is essential to maintain the team's competitiveness in Premier League football, especially in matches against strong opponents. Their ability to provide strength and discipline will help build a stronger foundation for the future.

Key Points

• Report: Newcastle United, looking at Joao Palhinha.
• According to the Daily Mail, Joao Palhinha is on Newcastle United's radar and talks are ongoing for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as the Magpies plan to revamp their central ranks.
• Report: Newcastle United considering moves for two midfielders.

Newcastle United are heating up the transfer market to bolster their midfield, with Joao Palhinha reportedly on the shortlist as talks intensify for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Daily Mail claim the Magpies are bringing back two experienced midfielders as part of a wider plan to restructure and strengthen the core of the squad. Under coach Eddie Howe, Newcastle's aim was clear: add depth, experience and stability in the middle to support their high-energy, pressing style of play. Amid longer campaigns and a tighter schedule, it's important for the Magpies to have players with stamina and discipline in the position—and that's where the two targets mentioned in the report come into play. Palhinha, known as one of the most consistent ball-winners in the Premier League, brings an aggressive defence, attacking skills and a solid presence in front of the defence. His profile matches Newcastle's need for a natural disruptor of the opposition attack, especially in matches against strong ball-holding teams. Meanwhile, Hojbjerg is a veteran leader in the middle who is positionally good, has a careful pass, and can dictate the tempo of the game. His experience at the highest level in England and Europe could give Newcastle the necessary poise in situations that require control and organisation. If focused, he can anchor the middle behind more creative teammates. More than names, Newcastle's signing of two midfielders shows the club is serious about building a balanced roster. The combination of ball-winning and game management that Palhinha and Hojbjerg bring matches the Magpies' desired action: be more solid without giving up pace and intensity in transition. For now, everything remains at rumor level and there is no official confirmation from Newcastle, even the clubs involved with the two players. However, the Daily Mail's mention that Palhinha is on the shortlist and talks are heating up with Hojbjerg is enough to show that the Tyneside club are moving in the market. Expect clearer direction to follow in the coming days as the Magpies gauge the value, timing and appropriate role of any potential signing. For supporters, the key takeaway: Newcastle's target is clear—bring reliable quality through the middle to raise the level of competition within the team and continue their rise to the Premier League. As long as there is no formal announcement, it remains to be watched for any new moves from St. James' Park.

What's next

Newcastle United are expected to continue their talks for Hojbjerg while also exploring the possibility of signing Palhinha. Negotiations could progress in the coming weeks, as the Magpies aim to complete their midfield signings before the start of the new season. Decisions in the transfer market will be critical in their preparation for longer Premier League campaigns.
