Daley Blind will soon return to the club house he grew up in. According to a report in the Netherlands, Ajax and the 36-year-old veteran defender are close to agreeing a one-year contract—which would mark Blind's third term as a player for the Amsterdammers. News of Blind's return has been circulating for a long time. In January, Ajax tried to find out the situation of their former homegrown, but Girona did not agree to release him in the middle of the season. Now that Blind's contract in Catalonia is over, there is no obstacle to a new integration. De Telegraaf also reported that the two sides have reached an understanding in the main talks and are just waiting to finalize the final details before signing the contract at the Johan Cruijff Arena. If it comes to fruition, it will be Blind's third spell at Ajax—a club he considers home and where he first rose to fame. In his first two terms, Blind made 333 official appearances for Ajax and helped win seven Eredivisie championships—a testament to his durability, build-up skills from the back, and defensive leadership.

In recent years, Blind played under Míchel at Girona, and the two are expected to link up again at Ajax. In addition to his quality on the pitch, Blind is also expected to bring valuable experience and a voice within the dressing room—an asset for any coach seeking a stronger foundation at the back and better organization in play from the back. It is not new for Ajax to return to the old pillars of the team, especially if the goal is to combine youth and experience. In this case, Blind—who knows the club's culture, expectations, and style—fits the bill perfectly. Once the final contract settlement is completed, his new chapter in Amsterdam will officially open. There is also a possibility, according to the report, that Blind will remain at Ajax in another capacity after the upcoming season—an indication that the club is eyeing a longer-term role for him beyond active play. For now, both sides are focused on sealing the deal so that Ajax supporters can once again see the familiar number at the back leading the defence.

What's next

It is expected that the final details of Blind's contract with Ajax will be finalized soon, allowing his official return to the Johan Cruijff Arena. With his arrival, Ajax can draw on his experience from his time at Girona, which will help their goals next season. His return could bring new vitality to the team and inspire the younger players.
