Royal's return to Brazil was not a happy one. He arrived at Flamengo from AC Milan last season but didn't quite fit into the Maracanã spotlight. In 40 games, he recorded one goal and five assists—low for the expected impact and a notable lack of consistency, something that didn't escape the fans either.
At Birmingham, Unai Emery is clearly looking for his backline: practicality and a solid structure in transition. The coach likes the right-back who knows how to get inside to form a makeshift back three when the left-back moves up. Royal has the physical attributes for it—he likes to duel on the ground and is willing to fight to the body.
