Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has warned Southampton to be "extremely careful" with debt and cashflow after 'Spygate' led to their elimination from the Championship play-offs and a four-point drop in 2026-27.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has warned that Southampton need to be "very careful" with its financial situation following 'Spygate' which resulted in the Saints being eliminated from the Championship play-offs and a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 season.
Based on the decision of an independent disciplinary commission, head coach Tonda Eckert allegedly approved the spying on the rehearsals of rival teams—including Middlesbrough who should have been opponents in the semi-final. As a result, Southampton lost their chance to return to the Premier League, something that had an immediate and long-term impact on their finances.
In an interview with BBC Radio Solent, Maguire said Southampton owed creditors more than £100m. While a large part of that is down to the parent company, he is more concerned by the report that by the end of 2025 outstanding transfer fees will reach £99m—a burden that has eaten into the club's cashflow this year.

This is why the play-off final is called the “£200m fight”: it includes extra TV money, an extra two years of parachute payments as a minimum, and the chance to test against the top teams in England and Europe.
Maguire also mentioned that Southampton could face legal challenges from clubs that failed to make the top six—including Wrexham—as well as from their own players. According to him, the feelings of the supporters are divided: some have accepted the incident, but many are angry and focus the blame on the club's management.
He said, one of the reasons for the club's silence in recent days may be the launch of an internal investigation to find out to what extent in the management chain the responsibility for the incident was approved or passed on. Serious financial implications are also expected for some individuals and possibly for the club itself.
While Eckert's future is still unclear, it is also a sign of uncertainty as to what is next for the players who were once only 90 minutes away from the Premier League. Maguire admitted that there have been previous cases where players have brought lawsuits against clubs, although it is uncertain whether such a move will succeed this time and it is not a "sure win" for either side.
