The tension between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao could pose challenges to any possible transaction.

Key Points

• Barcelona, offered to take Aymeric Laporte — COPE report.
• COPE report: Aymeric Laporte offered to Barcelona; there is said to be tension in Athletic Bilbao related to the Nico Williams saga.
• «Barcelona» offered to sign the champion of Europe Laporta — COPE.

Mundo Deportivo, citing information from radio station COPE in Spain, has revealed that Barcelona have been offered the possibility of signing Euro 2024 champion Aymeric Laporte. The veteran central defender is known for being left-footed, good in build-up play, and has experience at the highest level of European competition — qualities that match the Blaugrana's traditional style of play. The report adds that the relationship between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao remains tense after the Catalans' resounding pursuit of Nico Williams in the summer of 2024. In this context, it is mentioned that if Barca tries to act for targets related to San Mamés, it is said that it is difficult to expect any cooperation. Laporte is one of the best-known products of the Basque system, and was then a key piece of Athletic's defense before moving to another European giant and becoming a regular at international level. With Spain's success at UEFA Euro 2024, the value of his experience and leadership at the back has increased even more — making his name a natural link with elite clubs looking for an immediate defensive solution.

On the Barcelona side, the need for depth and quality at the back is clear, especially given the intense competition in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League. There have been many occasions in recent seasons when Barca have needed a more reliable rotation at the center of defense due to a combination of injuries and fatigue from a long campaign. As such, any opportunity to land a tested left-footed centre-back is worth checking out in the transfer market. However, the report did not specify the details of the potential agreement, including the possible fee, length of the contract, or exact timing. Historically, any Barcelona moves have also depended on their salary cap and La Liga registration — factors that often dictate how quickly and how much a club can move in the transfer window. For now, the possibility remains a matter of debate. What is clear: the premium in the market for experienced centre-backs with a winning pedigree is high, and any offer relating to Laporte is sure to be carefully weighed by Barcelona — especially if it has implications for their relationship with Athletic and the wider dynamics of the Spanish market. While there are no concrete steps yet, followers will be watching to see if this offer bears fruit or remains at the level of exploratory talk.

What's next

If Barcelona pursue their interest in Aymeric Laporte, the tension in their relationship with Athletic Bilbao could worsen, resulting in a lack of cooperation. Barcelona must also consider their team building strategies while looking for defensive solutions. Despite the challenges, the signing of Laporte could be an important step for the club's future in La Liga.
