Bielsa, disappointed in Uruguay's draw against Saudi Arabia, even in the dominance of the game

Marcelo Bielsa did not hide his disappointment after Uruguay failed to clinch a win against Saudi Arabia in their opening World Cup 2026 match, despite La Celeste's dominance throughout the game.

Marcelo Bielsa could not hide his regret at the result of Uruguay's match against Saudi Arabia in their opening Group H of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Miami. Despite La Celeste's storm-like dominance—recording 67% ball possession, 22 shots in the second half, and 41 touches inside the box—they still had to fight to salvage a 1-1 draw. Maxi Araujo immediately gave hope to Uruguay after tying the game ten minutes before the end, making up for Saudi Arabia's Abdulelah Al Amri's first goal.

"We faced an opponent we should have passed," Bielsa said after the match. "In the first half, we were far from what we should have been. No dynamism, no pressure, no depth. When a strong team doesn't bring out their quality, a weaker opponent takes courage. Attacking is one thing, scoring goals is another."

Their early goal was also a historic record for Saudi Arabia—it was the first time since the 1994 World Cup against Belgium that they had opened the scoring in the finals. Salem Al Dawsari, on the other hand, insisted that they can fight: "We will gradually enter the next stage. We are here to win, not just to join."

Despite Uruguay's strong attack in the second half, they still failed to take the win. Uruguay's Federico Valverde was selected as the Superior Player of the Match. For Bielsa, the team must take the lessons learned from this match to heart in order to recover in the next game and ensure progress to the World Cup.
