Borussia Dortmund are rushing to sign Konstantinos Karetsas from KRC Genk, aiming to close the deal this week before the team set sail for their pre-season tour of Japan. According to Sky Germany, BVB officials have flown to Belgium to personally meet with Genk sporting director Dimitri De Condé and finalize negotiations for the 18-year-old playmaker. Dortmund are reportedly set to close the deal for around €35m, which is Genk's asking price for their young star. Although BVB's offer initially hovered around €30m, the sides are open to throwing in performance-based add-ons and a possible sell-on clause to bring the positions closer. The personal terms have been fully agreed in Karetsas' camp, so the final discussion is between the two clubs. The team's trip to Japan next Sunday is a crucial deadline for Dortmund—they want to formalize the transfer before embarking on the tour so that the new midfield addition can be included in the pre-season program immediately. If talks with Belgium go well in the next few hours, it is expected that Karetsas could become the next big signing this summer for the black and yellow.

Karetsas was lauded in Europe after a breakout season in which he tallied 18 assists. He is a product of Genk's renowned academy that produced names such as Kevin De Bruyne and Thibaut Courtois. As a lefty who can play as No. 10 or start from the right, he is known for tight control and creative passing—traits considered a perfect match for the system Dortmund are looking for in the middle. In style of play, Karetsas can be considered the exact profile to deepen BVB's option in the attacking midfield. He can add creativity between the lines and provide the final pass from half-spaces—weapons that go a long way in creating chances and improving the quality of their final ball. In the context of the Bundesliga and higher level European competition, the adaptation of a technical playmaker of his caliber is a significant step for Dortmund's development. The timing of BVB's move is also strategic. According to the report, they have been monitoring Karetsas for two years and the player has decided to prioritize Dortmund despite interest from Milan. It shows the leadership's clear path to building a younger core with a high ceiling under a clear project. While waiting for the final green light on the price, the direction is clear: Dortmund are ready to complete the deal using a combination of base fee and add-ons, including a mechanism that will still benefit Genk should the player be sold again in the future. Once signed, BVB will have another high-potential creator who can also jump into their pre-season immediately to speed up integration before the start of the new campaign.

What's next

The deal between Borussia Dortmund and KRC Genk is expected to be closed before the pre-season tour to Japan. If the negotiations are successful, Karetsas could be immediately integrated into Dortmund's program, giving him the opportunity to get to know his new teammates and game system. His arrival could open up more opportunities for player development under the leadership of Dortmund's coaches.
