Why it matters

FC Köln's rejection of Borussia Dortmund's fourth offer for Said El Mala shows Köln's strong position in the transfer market. Their €50m guaranteed fee demand sets a high standard for negotiations, which could affect Dortmund's next steps in their summer transfer window.

FC Köln remain in a tough position after rejecting Borussia Dortmund's fourth offer for young attacking prospect Said El Mala, according to separate reports in Germany. Although the total value of the proposal exceeded €55 million due to easily attainable performance bonuses and an included sell-on percentage, it still did not meet Köln's main condition: the €50m guaranteed fee itself. Sky Germany reported that Dortmund submitted their latest bid on Wednesday evening. The structure of the offer: a fixed fee of less than €50m, supported by various add-ons for a potential total package of more than €55m. Geißblog added, BVB also tried to agree with Köln through a sell-on clause for a possible future resale. However, Geißblog and local tabloid Express have also confirmed that Köln have again rejected the proposal and are adamant that the base fee should reach at least €50m, independent of bonuses or any future transfer component. This event highlights how Dortmund's bid formula has changed. On Tuesday, Get German Football News reported that BVB are preparing a package of around €55m for El Mala, which according to Sky's initial information will consist of €50m guaranteed and an additional €5m in bonuses. As actually submitted, the fixed component remained below Köln's demand, causing the negotiation gap to remain.

Important context: Dortmund have already raised significantly from their previous offer of €45m (consisting of €37m guaranteed and €8m bonuses) which was also initially rejected. This shows the serious intention of BVB to take El Mala, but it is also clear that Köln will not agree until the transfer fee itself hits €50m guaranteed. For Dortmund, a common tactic in the modern market is to draft a lower fixed fee backed by performance-related add-ons and sell-on clauses—ways to reduce immediate risk while rewarding the seller if the player's potential explodes. But in El Mala's case, Köln seem to believe the value of their asset is strong enough to demand the full amount unconditionally. As talks continue, the status quo remains: BVB are willing to lay out a total package in excess of €50m, but Köln insist that the full €50m must be guaranteed before they will finally open the door to Said El Mala's departure.

What's next

Borussia Dortmund are expected to continue their pursuit of El Mala, who is a promising midfield signing in Bundesliga football. BVB may need to re-evaluate their offer or look for another target to improve their squad for the coming season.
