Brentford are in advanced talks to sign defensive midfielder Mamadou Sangaré from RC Lens for around €48 million, according to a report by L'Equipe published this Tuesday. The report describes the 24-year-old Malian international as one of the standouts in Ligue 1's midfield last season, making him a prime target for the Premier League club to strengthen the central part of their team. According to the report, Lens and Brentford have been quietly talking for several weeks to iron out the details of the transfer. Although there has been no official announcement from either side, it is said that the agreement between the two clubs is close and the formal closing of the deal depends only on the final terms and other add-ons. Usually, when it goes further, the next step is a review of the contract, possible adjustment of personal terms, and standard medical tests before finally signing. Brentford are not alone in the chase. Crystal Palace is also said to be on the lookout and could enter a higher offer to grab Sangaré, something that could possibly increase the price even further or change the course of negotiations. In the traditional dynamics of the transfer market, such a situation prompts negotiations between the original bidder and the selling club to avoid a bidding war.

For Brentford, Sangaré's potential arrival could provide added strength and depth to the midfield—an important component especially in the intensive Premier League schedule. As the roster continues to adjust, the Bees are clearly targeting the addition of a ball-winner who has positional discipline and can support defense and quick transition. While it is not yet certain where exactly the player will fit into the rotation, the reported price suggests that he is seen to be a central piece in the West London-based club's long-term plan. From Lens' point of view, the potential big sale could open up funds for reshaping the midfield. In recent years, the Premier League has often become a destination for Ligue 1 standouts due to its competitive level and ability to offer bigger transfer and wage packages. For now, this matter remains in the negotiation stage. The next few days will be critical—whether Sangaré will sign for Brentford or whether Crystal Palace can make an entry. Until there is a signature and an official statement from the clubs, the status of the deal remains "according to reports", but it is clearly one of the hottest moves in the Premier League transfer market this week.

What's next

If negotiations continue, the next step will be to review the contract and possibly adjust personal terms before medical examinations. Crystal Palace's presence in the talks could put further pressure on Brentford to speed up the deal. In the summer transfer window, such situations usually cause negotiations to move quickly to avoid a bidding war that could raise the price for Sangaré.
