Cambridge United have announced their new signing after signing 22-year-old goalkeeper Gabriel Breeze from Carlisle United on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. The transfer strengthens Cambridge's depth at the goalkeeper position as the team prepares for the upcoming season at a higher level. Last campaign, Breeze made 46 appearances for Carlisle in the National League and was the Cumbrians' main goalkeeper as they attempted to return to the Football League. Carlisle missed out on promotion after losing in the play-off semi-final, 2-1 at home to Boreham Wood in May after extra-time — an event which ended the club's campaign in heavy fashion. According to Cambridge's statement, they expect Breeze to bring experience and growth potential. Manager Neil Harris mentioned that they have been monitoring the young goalkeeper for some time and see his ability to grow under a longer contract. In Harris' words: "We've followed Gabriel for a long time — a very young goalkeeper with valuable experience already. We believe that over the length of the contract he will get good experience and a chance to develop, but we also know he has the ability to come in and play right away." (Filipino translation from the original statement).

Breeze's arrival will bring direct competition between him and the U's current number one, Jake Eastwood. Competition in the position is important especially as Cambridge had the best defensive record in League Two last season, conceding just 33 goals as they climbed to secure promotion to the third tier. The added ability at the back will help the team maintain a solid defense as they strive to be ready for a higher level of competition. For Breeze, the move is an opportunity to show up on a bigger stage and train under the pressure of a higher league. For Cambridge, this is a clear step in strengthening their roster, especially in a position that requires cohesion and confidence at the back. No details have been released regarding the transfer fee from either side, and the club has revealed that the contract will run for three years. Cambridge and Carlisle supporters will be watching Breeze's next move — whether he becomes first choice straightaway or gradually develops his role in the squad as the competition between him and Eastwood grows.

What's next

Breeze is expected to compete with Jake Eastwood for the number one goalkeeper position at Cambridge United. His arrival is aimed at strengthening the team's defense, which is known for their excellent record in League Two, where they have recorded 33 goals conceded. Under the leadership of manager Neil Harris, Breeze can provide new impetus and opportunity for his own development next season.
