Context

Marco Ruggero, born in 2000, had a brief spell at Spezia after his move from Juve Stabia. Despite his limited game time, he is admired by Serie B clubs such as Catanzaro, who aim to sign him to strengthen their defence.

Why it matters

Catanzaro's interest in Marco Ruggero shows their ambition to strengthen their defense in Serie B. Despite Ruggero's short stay at Spezia, his potential continues to be recognized by Serie B clubs, suggesting that he is capable of contributing at a higher level of competition.

Key Points

• Catanzaro target Marco Ruggero of Spezia, ready.
• Catanzaro is keen on Spezia's Marco Ruggero and is ready to table an offer of around €500k to take the defense away from rival Serie B teams.
• Il Catanzaro goes to another defender of Spezia: pronto lo scatto per Ruggero.

Catanzaro opened another line in the market after aggressively swooping in for Spezia defender Marco Ruggero. According to a report by Il Secolo XIX, the club from Calabria is ready to table an offer of around half a million euros to acquire the central defender—an attempt that could outpace other interested teams. Ruggero's stay at Spezia has been short: just six months and nine appearances since his January arrival from Juve Stabia, with a contract that runs until 2028. Despite this, Spezia's relegation to Serie C has changed the direction of their plan—especially in terms of wages—so the door is open to offers to fit into the team's new budget structure. While Ruggero's first spell with the Aquilotti didn't shine, the market for the 2000-born center hasn't lost steam either. Several Serie B teams—including Vicenza, SudTirol, and Empoli—have already shown interest. In the early days of the matter, Empoli seemed to be closer to closing the deal, but in the final hours Catanzaro intervened strongly and were ready to challenge the rival for the player's signature.

The two clubs also have a previous connection: Catanzaro recently signed wide man Antonio Candela from Spezia. Now, they could follow that up by signing Ruggero to solidify the back line. Ruggero is reportedly valued at around €700k, but Catanzaro are said to be willing to test an offer of around €500k—a price that could still convince Spezia as it would result in book profits. Important detail for the Ligurians: Ruggero arrived for €350k in January, so anything higher than this is plusvalía for their balance sheet. For Catanzaro's side, the acquisition of a young centre-back with height and potential is compatible with the need to deepen the defense for another competitive campaign in Serie B. As the race for Ruggero's signature intensifies, the strategy is clear: Catanzaro wants to close the gap at the back and add competition to the central defensive position. Vicenza, SudTirol and Empoli will remain on the lookout, but if Catanzaro can push through their offer, they could leapfrog everyone and land Ruggero as the next piece in their backline rebuild. As of now, there is no final agreement and the market is still open. But with Spezia's transfer priority after relegation, and Catanzaro's determination to strengthen the rotation, Marco Ruggero is at the center of a potential move that could suit all sides.

What's next

Catanzaro are expected to table an offer of around €500k for Ruggero, which could be the start of a spirited negotiation. If they can reach the deal, it could be followed by other steps to strengthen their squad for the upcoming Serie B season.
