Chávez and Quiñones put Mexico on course for first three wins in World Cup group stage
Co-hosts Mexico added two goals against Czechia in Mexico City — Mateo Chávez and Julián Quiñones opened the scoring as El Tri moved closer to the Round of 32.
Mexico, one of the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, seriously leads their match against Czechia in Mexico City and seems close to matching a historic victory in the group stage. Buoyed by two wins — 2-0 against South Africa and 1-0 against Korea Republic — Javier Aguirre's side's momentum in Group A continues.
The home crowd had their hopes up when Mateo Chávez, 22 and playing at left-back for AZ Alkmaar, showed composure to finish with a composed finish for his first senior international goal. Cheers rang out in the stadium after Chávez's strike, which gave El Tri the first lead.

The addition of these two goals further strengthened Mexico's position in the group table.
If Mexico can hold on to the result until full-time, it will become the first time in history to finish the group stage with three wins from three matches at a FIFA World Cup. Amid the noise about the USMNT and Canada advancing to the next round, Mexico's own fairytale could be quietly unfolding in the tournament.
Despite the good start, it will remain important for El Tri to maintain concentration and discipline in defense and be effective in creating chances in the coming matches to ensure promotion to the Round of 32.
