Chelsea's plans to strengthen the defense are progressing after Maxence Lacroix was identified as the main target in the middle. According to a report by Sky Sports UK, negotiations between the Blues and Crystal Palace for the permanent transfer of the French centre-back are at an advanced stage. The exchange of communication between the two clubs is positive and talks are active regarding the fee structure and other details of the agreement. Crystal Palace are reportedly demanding a fee in excess of €65 million to allow their defender to leave. While no deal has been finalized at the time of writing, the Eagles clearly rate Lacroix highly, who has been seen as a key piece of their back line since he started playing in the Premier League. Chelsea's search has focused on a centre-back with physicality, reliability and proven league experience—qualities that match Lacroix. In the system and speed of the Premier League, the Blues want to have more leadership and superiority in defense to better handle the set-piece situations and quick transitions of the opponents.

Chelsea's financial position also contributes to the possible closing of the transaction. With a series of sales in the current window bringing in an estimated £130 million, the club has ample room to invest heavily in defense if required. While the exact amount, add-ons and possible fee structure still need to be discussed, the Blues are clearly ready to table a serious offer for the target player. A good relationship between the two sides is also important. In recent transactions, communication between Chelsea and Crystal Palace has proven to be good, and this is expected to help avoid delays in negotiations on the final details. For Chelsea, Lacroix's arrival—if successful—will add depth and competition to the centre-back position. This will provide more rotation options in the tight weeks of the schedule and increase the level of their defense in the Premier League and domestic cups. As for Crystal Palace, talk of a high fee could open up space to reinvest in other positions should the offer be accepted. At the moment, active dialogue between the two clubs continues. If the price and terms are agreed upon, it is possible to close the operation in the next few weeks. Until it becomes official, it will remain at the level of advanced negotiations and not yet a final transfer.

What's next

If the positive talks between Chelsea and Crystal Palace continue, Lacroix's transfer could be completed soon. This move could allow Chelsea to further strengthen their defense ahead of the next part of the Premier League season. Crystal Palace's next steps should also be watched, especially how they will replace their core defense if Lacroix's departure goes ahead.
