Clement Turpin Appointed as Referee in England vs Croatia in World Cup 2026

Clement Turpin has been officially chosen as the referee for England's first match in the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 against Croatia, which will be held this Wednesday. Turpin, a seasoned referee from France, is known for strict enforcement of the law on the pitch and became the subject of controversy after he was criticized by former Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel.

In April 2023 during a match between Bayern Munich and Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, Turpin showed Tuchel two yellow cards, causing him to be sent off in the technical area. Turpin was also known to be aggressive after issuing five yellow cards in the first half of the match and immediately red carding Bayern's Dayot Upamecano for a heavy foul on Erling Haaland. However, the red card was revoked with the help of VAR due to offside.

Due to Bayern's loss with an aggregate score of 4-1, Tuchel strongly criticized the referee. According to him, "Two things did not match the level — the pitch was not in good condition and the referee, Grade E. I would give him one out of ten. His whistle was very bad. Unbelievable at this high level." He added that all the calls against their team were favorable and they didn't have a chance to recover because it seemed like they had three opponents.

Tuchel was not the only one to experience Turpin's strict style. Also in a Real Madrid match, Jude Bellingham immediately observed how quickly Turpin acted in the middle of a high-pressure moment where he prevented Bellingham from disturbing Bayern's Harry Kane as he was taking a penalty.

Despite the controversies, Turpin is widely respected in international football. He has also been tasked with hosting the 2021 Europa League final and 2022 Champions League final. He is also among those chosen to referee at Euro 2024, where he officiated England's match against Slovenia which ended in a draw (0-0).

The appointment of Turpin to one of the most anticipated matches of the 2026 World Cup is proof of FIFA's confidence in his ability as one of the best referees in Europe.
