Clement Turpin has been appointed as the referee of England's first match against Croatia in the FIFA World Cup 2026, where his former feud with Thomas Tuchel is still reverberating due to the incident in the Champions League.
Clement Turpin has been formally appointed as the referee for England's opening match against Croatia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday. Although Turpin has a high reputation as one of the top referees in Europe, he has left England head coach Thomas Tuchel with a huge controversy.
It can be remembered that in April 2023, Turpin refereed the second leg of the quarterfinals of the Champions League between Bayern Munich—then led by Tuchel—and Manchester City. In that match, Tuchel was shown a yellow card twice, causing him to be sent off the field. The tension heated up even more when Turpin issued five yellow cards and a straight red to Upamecano, although VAR also overturned it due to offside.

Due to the defeat of Bayern Munich with an aggregate score of 4-1, Tuchel did not hold back and criticized Turpin very much in the post-match conference: "There were only two things that did not pass the night: the quality of the pitch and the referee. I will give him one out of ten. He made a very bad call. I did not think that at this level. We had no chance to rise because of the officiating," said Tuchel.
Despite the tension, Turpin remains one of the most recognized referees in Europe—he officiated the Europa League final in 2021 and the Champions League final in 2022. Most recently, he also officiated at Euro 2024 and recorded a goalless draw between England and Slovenia.
