Aurele Amenda, a 22-year-old Swiss centre-back, is expected to become Coventry City's third official signing this summer. His move from Eintracht Frankfurt aims to strengthen the team's defense as they return to top-flight football in England.

Why it matters

Aurele Amenda's move to Coventry City is an important step for their return to Premier League football after 25 years. His experience from the World Cup and ability as a centre-back will help bolster the Sky Blues' defence. This deal shows Coventry's active move in the summer transfer window to improve their squad.

Coventry City are close to completing a transfer for Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt valued at over £17 million. According to the report, the deal will have an initial fee of £15.4 million and an additional £1.7 million in add-ons, with the player set to sign a four-year contract with the Sky Blues. The 22-year-old Swiss centre-back is said to have been swayed by a strong presentation from coach Frank Lampard and Coventry's recruitment team, which is the main reason why the defender opted for the move. Although he was part of the Switzerland squad that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, he did not get a chance to play in the tournament. If the move goes through, Amenda's arrival will be Coventry's third official signing this summer. Winger Loum Tchaouna arrived earlier from Burnley and midfielder Frank Onyeka made the move permanent from Brentford. The signings are part of the team's wider preparations for their return to England's top-flight — the first time in 25 years.

Coventry also continue to be interested in signing goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from Brighton, but so far no agreement has been reached. As an alternative, the club are looking at Chelsea's Filip Jorgensen if signing Rushworth fails. After renewing Lampard's contract this summer, Coventry began pre-season with a behind-closed-doors friendly in which they lost 3-2 against Wimbledon. As part of their preparations ahead of the start of the Premier League campaign, they are still set to face Northampton Town and Espanyol in the next friendlies. Movements in the transfer market show Coventry's clear intention to be competitive as they return home to the highest level of English football. The addition of a young centre-back with club experience and exposure to the international setup, such as Amenda, fulfills the team's need to strengthen their backline as they prepare for the challenge of the Premier League. Followers will wait for official confirmation from Coventry and Eintracht Frankfurt before the transfer is considered complete. Until then, fans will continue to monitor whether Amenda will indeed be part of the Sky Blues heading into the new season.

What's next

If the move goes through, Amenda is expected to be part of Coventry City's pre-season preparations, alongside other new signings such as Loum Tchaouna and Frank Onyeka. They are also continuing their efforts to sign Carl Rushworth from Brighton, while looking at other options if that doesn't work out. These steps are part of the club's wider plans for their participation in the Premier League.
