Tensions are heating up in the World Cup 2026 semifinal in Atlanta after the official Falkland Islands account on X (formerly Twitter) expressed support for England. With the score 0-0 at the end of the first 45 minutes of the match against Argentina, the account posted a short message “Crediamoci” — accompanied by a lion emoji and the England flag — in clear support of the Three Lions in the match that will decide who will advance to the final of the tournament. The rivalry between England and Argentina revolves not only inside the pitch. It is deeply rooted in history, particularly in the April to June 1982 war for control of the Falkland Islands (also called the Malvinas in Argentina), along with Georgia del Sur and the South Sandwich Islands. The conflict ended with United Kingdom control of the archipelago, and since then it has become a symbol of the two sides' complex relationship — a context that always accompanies whenever their national teams meet on football's biggest stages.

So the Falkland Islands' stance on social media is no longer surprising. The simple “Crediamoci” accompanied by a lion — a symbol of courage and a well-known symbol associated with England — and the country's flag, was enough to spark discussion and add heat to a match that once carried the weight of history. Despite this, the actual clash remains the focus of the 90 minutes (or so) in Atlanta, where the final of the most prized tournament in world football hangs in the balance. In the first half, both sides were cautious and disciplined, which resulted in a 0-0 halftime score. After all, strict defense, intense duels in the middle, and patiently searching for holes in the final third dictated the story of the first 45 minutes. In the second half, it is expected that both sides will attack more, especially since the stake is so high — the ticket to the grand final of this edition of the World Cup that is being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This incident also shows how social media is becoming a stage for symbolic statements and support in sport. In a match where the score isn't the only measure, every action — from on the pitch to the posts online — takes on extra meaning. As both teams enter the critical stage of the match, it will be seen which of history, tactics and fortitude will prevail to advance to the highest level of the tournament.

What's next

Despite the 0-0 score at halftime, the match is expected to be more heated in the second half as both teams aim to secure the ticket to the final. The result of this match will not only determine the next step for Inghilterra and Argentina but may also affect their plans for the World Cup 2026 football. Victories or defeats in such matches can open up new opportunities or challenges for the players and coaching staff in the future.
