His ability to play in different positions gives flexibility in the coach's tactics.

Key Points

• Crystal Palace, there is a verbal agreement to acquire the former.
• Crystal Palace reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sign Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer from Celta Vigo, according to Fabrizio Romano.
• Oscar Minguenza remains central to Crystal Palace's plans.

Crystal Palace have reportedly obtained a verbal agreement for the transfer of Oscar Mingueza on a free transfer from Celta Vigo, according to renowned transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano. The Spanish defender's contract expired last month, and although he was reportedly offered a new deal by Celta, Mingueza chose to seek a new challenge in his career. Mingueza has also been linked with Aston Villa, where Mingueza is said to be highly regarded due to his versatility at the back. On the Palace side, the 27-year-old has long been listed as a "secret" target and is seen as an immediate help in strengthening the defense for the upcoming season. A product of Barcelona's youth system, Mingueza first rose to prominence when he was promoted to the first team in 2020. He made 66 appearances for the Blaugrana in various competitions before moving to Celta. At Vigo, he became a regular and recorded over one hundred games in four seasons, including seven goals and 15 assists—numbers that reflect his contribution not only in defense but also in building play from the back.

Mingueza is known as a natural right-back and center-back, and has the ability to operate as a wing-back depending on the coach's system. This versatility is the main reason why interest in him is high: he can be thrown into a back-four or even a back-three set-up, and is ready to take over different roles based on the needs of the game. While the agreement is still verbal, the normal processes are expected to follow before the move is formally announced—including finalizing paperwork and other contract details. However, this news is a clear indication of Palace's intention to add quality and depth to their defense to be more competitive throughout the campaign. Meanwhile, Aston Villa's interest remains moot, but it is currently clear that Crystal Palace are the frontrunners for Mingueza's signature. If realized, the Eagles will get a defense that is mature, experienced in La Liga and in big matches, and has a skill set to suit the modern style of defending and building from the back. There's no official announcement date yet, but expect details to roll out in the coming days. For Palace, this is a potentially smart move in the market. For Mingueza, it's a new start in England and a chance to prove his worth in the intensity of the Premier League competition.

What's next

Mingueza's transfer to Crystal Palace is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, as part of the club's wider plans for the summer transfer window. Acquiring him could be an important step for Palace in their aim to compete in both domestic and European competitions. Also, Aston Villa's interest in him will continue to be monitored, showing a high regard for his ability.
