With a tote bag slung over his shoulder and a smile as he led the players, Steven Pressley walked down Tannadice Street ahead of Saturday's derby. A year ago, he was still struggling to convince exasperated Dens Park supporters after a string of poor results and criticism. Last season Dundee witnessed an early exit from the League Cup after back-to-back defeats against the lower leagues, and followed that with a five-game winless start to the Scottish Premiership. The fourth league in the said five-match run was a 2-0 defeat at their rivals Dundee United—a situation that increased the pressure on Pressley. But a year since then, the story has changed: the same 2-0 scoreline is currently in favor of their team. The away fans came home from Tannadice in high spirits, and Dundee have now moved up to second place in the league. "I'm very proud of this group of players," Pressley told BBC Scotland. "Derbies are not won with tactics, but with spirit and determination, and I think we showed a lot of that." The coach did not deny that the team did not execute all parts of his plan: "Honestly, we did not execute any part of the [game plan]," he added. "But our performance showed the courage and determination that our supporters are so proud of."

Since the end of last season, when Dundee survived with three wins in the last four league games, the team has now won five of their last seven Premiership matches. Although Pressley is cautious about expectations, there is clearly an ambition within the camp to improve on the previous eighth place finish. Pressley's personality—calm and straightforward—is a big reason the players bond under him. However, his growth as a coach should not be underestimated, which he says has been shaped by four years at a thriving Premier League club south of the border. Due to his close connections, Dundee have been successful in the loan market in recent years, but many players have also come from within Scottish football. Some examples of growth: Arbroath midfielder Ryan Flynn—who played with Pressley at Falkirk—revealed that Pressley was good at instilling confidence in players. The versatile Drey Wright, who opened the scoring in the derby, has been a key piece since arriving from St Johnstone. Alan Forrest was snapped up after leaving Hearts, while Charlie Reilly and Joe Bevan are former Albion Rovers players. The second goal came from Owen Bevan, who was also previously on loan at Hibernian in 2024 but did not play for that. In the middle, the duo of Owen Bevan and Ryan Astley have been solid at a time when they have struggled. "Sometimes winning the fight is getting comfortable with the uncomfortable, and we've done that on a few occasions," Pressley concluded. "It wasn't a tactical detail that won us today; it was a group of players determined not to lose the derby and I couldn't be more proud."

What's next

On their current form, Dundee are expected to continue their good run in the next Scottish Premiership matches. The next few games will be important to maintain the momentum and possibly keep up with the top teams. Victory in the derby could be the foundation for a more successful campaign in the rest of the season.
