By Sports.

Context

Edson Álvarez, a 28-year-old Mexican international, has had challenges in his career following West Ham United's relegation from the Premier League. His previous loan spell at Fenerbahçe was unsuccessful, so a move to a La Liga club like Real Sociedad could be key to his player development and return to form.

Why it matters

Edson Álvarez's move to Real Sociedad was an important step in his career, especially after a difficult season with West Ham United. His decision to take a pay cut shows his dedication to developing as a player and the desire to play at the highest level of La Liga football. The addition of a midfield signing like Álvarez will boost San Sebastián's team in their bid to keep up with the league.

• Edson Álvarez, former West Ham midfielder and Mexican international, will soon sign a loan deal with Real Sociedad.

Transfer journalist Ekrem Konur has confirmed that Edson Álvarez, West Ham United's Mexican midfielder, is set to move permanently to Spain's Real Sociedad on a season-long loan. Álvarez chose to take a pay cut to make this transfer happen, proof of his dedication to playing at a high level in Europe again rather than staying in England's Championship. Several teams from Europe tried to sign Álvarez in the current summer transfer window, but the player chose to move to San Sebastián. Right now, Real Sociedad and Álvarez's camp are finalizing the final documents to formalize the loan deal before the start of the new La Liga season. Álvarez was affected by West Ham United's relegation from the Premier League last season, causing him to lack playing time. He also had a loan spell with Turkey's Fenerbahçe in 2025/26, but the partnership between the two sides was unsuccessful—the Turkish club were unable to exercise their €22 million option to buy after Álvarez played 12 times in the Süper Lig and 5 times in the Europa League. No goals or assists were recorded and ended up in a series of injuries, although his 93% passing accuracy in European games rose as a positive take.

Despite trials at club level, Álvarez still cements his name as Mexico's main midfielder with 103 caps and has been a starter in all of El Tri's four matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in their home country. The world football's confidence in his ability is still not fading, so his move to Real Sociedad is considered the right move. At the age of 28, these are Álvarez's prime years as a defensive midfielder. He will not be able to stay in another transition year or, worse, be relegated to the English Championship which could damage his career trajectory in Europe. Real Sociedad is known as a team with a solid strategy, especially under coach Pellegrino Matarazzo's system that requires an intelligent defensive anchor—a role previously played by Mikel Merino and Martín Zubimendi. According to reports, Álvarez's 94% defensive contribution rating shows that he fits well in this system. Álvarez chose Anoeta even though there was a higher offer from Germany, proof of his desire to give meaning to his career again. West Ham United are clearly not involved in the next phase of Álvarez's football journey, while Real Sociedad have secured additional quality in midfield for the new La Liga campaign.

What's next

Alvarez's loan deal with Real Sociedad is expected to be formalized in the coming days, as the final documents are finalized. His move could provide a fresh start for him, who hopes to bounce back from last season's challenges. Upon his arrival, he is expected to help build Real Sociedad's midfield and contribute to their La Liga campaign.
