Erling Haaland was at the center of a sensational night at the New York New Jersey Stadium as he sealed Brazil's trip to the FIFA World Cup 2026. In a tense Round of 16, Norway returned to the quarterfinal stage for the first time after beating Brazil 2-1. The scoring started for Norway in the 11th minute when Haaland received a good cross from winger Andreas Schjelderup and headed the ball home for the first goal. The performance of Norway's goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland also quickly became important—he had four saves including a penalty save against Bruno Guimarães that came early in the game and helped keep the score even in the first few minutes. Full time was full of chances for Brazil but they couldn't break down the defense and Nyland was brilliant. In the 90th minute, Haaland again showed killer instinct: he completed another move and placed the last kick that gave 2-0 in favor of Norway. According to tournament records, this was his first goal in the competition that was not scored as a one-touch finish; his six previous goals were one-touch. Haaland is now joint leader of the Golden Boot race with seven goals, level with Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi.

Brazil showed determination. Neymar was brought on in the 67th minute and scored a penalty in extra time—a hope for a comeback—but it wasn't enough to dampen the Seleção's hopes. The defeat marks Brazil's lightest exit from the World Cup since 1990 (Italy), and confirms that they have not won against a European team in the knockout phase for a long time since they won the 2002 final against Germany. As for Norway, they will face the winner of their next tie between Mexico and England in the quarterfinals. The historic quarterfinal reach is a huge achievement for the team and will give new momentum to their campaign. On the other hand, Brazil will draw important lessons from the early exit: reputation and talent are not enough; consistent defense, clinical finishing, and smooth play at critical moments are also needed. Key notes: Haaland (7 tournament goals, tied for Golden Boot), Nyland (4 saves including penalty save), Neymar (substitute 67', penalty goal in stoppage).

What's next

With their win, Norway will advance to the quarterfinals of the World Cup 2026, where they are expected to face another strong opponent. Meanwhile, Brazil will have to reevaluate their strategy and team building for the next few tournaments, especially as their stars like Neymar are nearing the end of their World Cup careers.
