His presence on live streams brings increased interest in World Cup 2026 matches, but such incidents put his reputation and the event as a whole under scrutiny.

Why it matters

The incident of alleged racism at IShowSpeed exposes the ongoing issue of discrimination in football, especially in major tournaments such as the World Cup 2026. Such incidents hinder FIFA's goal of promoting unity and respect within the sport. These allegations are sparking a wider conversation about fans' responsibility and the impact their actions have on the overall experience of World Cup 2026 football.

• News has emerged that FIFA is conducting an official investigation into allegations of racist abuse against IShowSpeed when Argentina and Cape Verde face off at the 2026 World Cup in Miami.
• IShowSpeed remains central to Argentina's plans.

FIFA, world football's governing body, has launched an official investigation into allegations of racist abuse involving popular American social media influencer IShowSpeed and a supporter during Argentina's match against Cape Verde at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The incident reportedly took place on Friday, July 3, at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, where Argentina won against Cape Verde, 3-2. IShowSpeed, also known as Darren Jason Watkins Jr., who has over 57 million subscribers on YouTube and 53 million followers on TikTok, was spotted on footage wearing a Cape Verde jersey while arguing with an Argentina fan in the audience. The said event was noticed on IShowSpeed's live stream, which garnered attention from football fans and media around the world. According to FIFA's official statement, they immediately acted on this complaint as soon as the incident was raised, as part of their advocacy to fight any form of discrimination. "The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity, and respect," the organization said. "It brings together people and cultures from different parts of the world. Anyone who destroys these spheres is not welcome in our game."

The IShowSpeed incident is not alone in the racism-related controversies at the current World Cup. A few days before, the criticism of Kylian Mbappé, star of the French team, also became news after receiving racist remarks from a Paraguayan senator on social media following the country's defeat against France. The French Football Federation is also preparing to file a lawsuit against the senator in response. The challenge of maintaining integrity and respect in every aspect of competition, especially in the sport's biggest tournament — the FIFA World Cup, has gripped the world of football. FIFA is firmly committed to suppressing any form of discrimination in order to keep football open and safe for all. While the investigation is still ongoing, fans not only in the Philippines but around the world hope that whoever is found responsible will be held accountable. This can be considered an important step towards a more inclusive environment in the field of football, especially now that the World Cup 2026 promotes equality and respect regardless of race or origin.

What's next

FIFA's investigation is expected to continue and steps may be taken to improve security and fan behavior at future matches. The results of the investigation may affect the reputation of the clubs and countries participating in the World Cup 2026. These measures are important to ensure that future matches will be safe and respectful for all participants.
