Why it matters

Genoa's first match in Serie A is important as it sets the tone for the entire campaign. Genoa supporters are known for their passionate support, so Daniele De Rossi's aim to earn their trust is a key aspect of their strategy. Getting off to a good start can give the team confidence and cement a connection with the fans.

Key Points

• Genoa by De Rossi: “We want to be worthy of.
• Before the start of Genoa's match against Napoli, Daniele De Rossi emphasized the responsibility towards the supporters and the unique tension of the first game of the campaign.
• Genoa, De Rossi: "Vogliamo essere all'altezza dei nostri tifosi. L'esordio è semper particolare".

A few minutes before the start of the match against Napoli, Daniele De Rossi, coach of Genoa, spoke to Sky Sport and insisted on a clear message to the supporters: his team wants to be worthy of the support of their fans. The former midfield general added that the first game always has a unique mixture of excitement, nerves and high expectations—a feeling known to any player or coach who has been through the start of a campaign. For Genoa, this first step is important. The opening match in Serie A often sets the tone for the following weeks—not only in terms of points on the table, but also in terms of group confidence and connection with supporters. Genoa fans are known for their loyal and vociferous support, and it was clear from De Rossi's statement that they intend to reciprocate with work, discipline and a collective run for every minute of the match. Napoli, on the other hand, as a long-standing force in Italian football, bring quality and pace to the attack. To keep up, Genoa needed a compact defense, good spacing between the lines, and quick transitions from defense to attack. With this type of opening, the margin for error is small; every second ball, press trigger, and set-piece assignment can dictate the course of the game.

Although De Rossi's message before kick-off was brief, the direction was clear: stand up to your own community and show the team's identity—high work without the ball, careful and direct attacks when opportunities arise, and fearless intensity in the middle. Such a statement serves as a guide not only to the players but also to the supporters who are waiting for a signal on how the new season will deal with their favorite team. Naturally the first game of the year is strange. There is the eagerness to see the form of the team, the new combinations, and how the leaders on the pitch will respond to the first challenges. For Genoa, it was a match that could serve as a measure of their courage and unity. For Napoli, this is an opportunity to show that their quality and consistency is still intact. In the end, the challenge shared by De Rossi—to be worthy of the supporters—will serve as a simple measure of success tonight: who is thirstier, more disciplined, and more willing to put in the effort to get the first important point of the season.

What's next

In their match against Napoli, Genoa will have to show strong defense and quick transition from defense to attack.
