There has been renewed noise in the market over Federico Chiesa's future at Liverpool after he missed Wednesday's training session. But according to Fabrizio Romano, there is no reason to consider this a sign of the Italian's possible departure from Anfield—a minor physical issue and not a transfer. Since arriving in 2024, Chiesa's role in the team has been repeatedly discussed. It is still difficult for him to get consistent starts and whenever there is a question of first XI selection or condition, he is always mentioned. His participation in the behind-closed-doors draw against Como, rather than the subsequent 2-0 win at Anfield which featured more first-team action, further fueled discussion that he still needs to work hard to fit into Andoni Iraola's plans. On his YouTube channel, Romano dismissed the speculation: "Federico Chiesa did not train with Liverpool and many have asked if this is a sign of his return to Italy. I don't think so. At the moment, I have no information about any negotiations Chiesa has with clubs in Italy, not yet. His not training does not mean he is leaving or moving to an Italian team. I believe it is just a physical issue that needs to be evaluated." This clarification is important at a time when any absence can easily be interpreted—as pressure on the club, caution, or a possible sign of an ongoing conversation. At the moment, indications at Melwood are that Liverpool are only managing a minor concern over Chiesa's condition and are not in active negotiations with teams in Italy.

In a wider context, Chiesa is 28 years old and entering a critical phase of the campaign under a new head coach. Iraola continues to shape his favorite attacking combination and, from the outside, Chiesa does not yet appear to be the centerpiece of the strongest XI. However, that doesn't mean he's on the market right away. Depth in the wide positions is also important to Liverpool. When fit, Chiesa brings a direct attack from the right—speed, courage in one-vs-ones, and a different rhythm in the final third of the pitch—giving Iraola tactical flexibility. When he's unavailable, talk quickly turns to the team's balance and the rotation up front. If there was one thing that prevented his form from exploding, it was a lack of rhythm. Little interruptions—a knock here, a short break there—repeatedly broke his momentum every time a door opened to regular minutes. So while the latest physical issue may seem minor, it comes at a critical time: Premier League action has begun and every practice carries weight. Iraola is expected to provide a more complete update on Chiesa's health ahead of Liverpool's trip to Newcastle United. Until then, logical reading: it's a matter of fitness first, not transfer. In the final days of any window, the noise won't go away, but for now, caution is more visible than going away. For supporters, it's still clear that Chiesa has the quality to use: pace, menace on the flank and intensity that suits the Premier League when on top form. There have been signs that he can play an important role under Iraola, especially as Liverpool need a reliable option up front. If the load is really light and he can return to regular training and matches, there is still time for Chiesa to change the story of his stay at Anfield.

What's next

In the coming weeks, Chiesa is expected to focus on his rehabilitation and training in order to return to fitness and earn his place in Liverpool's starting XI. His performance in the coming matches will be important not only for his own career but also for Liverpool's midfield signing plans. Fans and pundits will continue to monitor his progress as the summer transfer window approaches, which could bring more talk about his future.
