The South African Football Association (SAFA) has officially announced the departure of Hugo Broos as head coach of the South African national team. This news comes alongside a warm outpouring of gratitude from SAFA for the Belgian tactician's immense contribution to the upliftment of football in the country. Broos, 74 years old, stepped in as the head coach of Bafana Bafana in 2021, and he immediately led the team to one of the biggest successes in the history of South African football. At the 2026 World Cup held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, South Africa shocked the world when they reached the knockout stage of the tournament—their first in history. Broos led the team to the Round of 16, where they lost to Canada, 0-1. Despite the failure, Broos still holds the record as the oldest head coach to reach the knockout round of the World Cup. Apart from their World Cup run, Broos also led South Africa to the bronze medal at the 2023 African Cup of Nations, proving that the football program is headed in the right direction under his leadership. This is proof that he brought discipline, tactical skill, and confidence to Bafana Bafana, which the players invested in to level-up their performance on the continent and in the world.

Before his stint in South Africa, Broos had long been recognized as a seasoned coach in Europe and Africa. He has coached clubs such as Molenbeek, Club Brugge, Mouscron, Anderlecht, Genk, Zulte Waregem in Belgium; Pansseraikos in Greece; Trabzonspor in Turkey; and JS Kabylie in Algeria. He has also reportedly led the Cameroon national team in the past. In SAFA's formal statement, they made it clear that they greatly appreciate Broos' dedication and service: "We would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank coach Hugo for everything he has done for South African football." No details have been released on who will inherit the seat as the next head coach of Bafana Bafana, but it is clear that Broos will leave a great legacy on the country's football program. South African football fans—and indeed the whole of Africa—will be watching to see how the national team will once again triumph in upcoming tournaments such as AFCON, World Cup qualifiers, and major international competitions. Hugo Broos' episode in South Africa is a reminder of the value of persistence, the right system, and the inspiration of a leader in achieving history for the country.

What's next

With Broos' departure, the South African Football Association has to find a new head coach who can continue the team's good run. The next step is important to maintain the momentum that Bafana Bafana has achieved in the World Cup 2026 football and African Cup of Nations. The new coach must bring a new approach and inspiration to sustain the development of football in South Africa, especially in preparation for the next tournaments.
