Key Points

• Former Manchester City central defender John Stones is in Italy to complete a move to Inter Milan.

John Stones has arrived in Milan to complete his move to Inter Milan, following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City. The veteran England defender was greeted by reporters at the airport, signaling the imminent confirmation of the long-awaited deal by Nerazzurri supporters. After a decade of success at the Etihad, Stones will begin a new chapter in Serie A with extensive European experience expected to bolster coach Christian Chivu's defence. According to a Sky Italia report, Stones is scheduled to undergo medical tests and obtain a physical fitness certification from CONI this Thursday. Once all the formalities are settled, he is expected to sign a two-year contract worth €4 million per season. Inter aim to announce the signing in the next 24 to 48 hours, if there are no hiccups in the medical process. This is a big win for Inter who are aiming to defend their Scudetto. Chivu has long stressed the team's need for more experience with a winning streak at the back, and Stones fits the bill. During his time at Manchester City, the 32-year-old won 20 major trophies—including six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy—while also being recognized as one of the most unique ball-playing defenders under Pep Guardiola. It is this skill that Inter wants to translate into their build-up play and match control.

The Nerazzurri's plan at the back doesn't end there. Sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed that there are active discussions for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, the 2022 World champion with Argentina. It is possible that Stones and Romero will arrive at the same time if Benjamin Pavard leaves this transfer window. On the other side, Djed Spence floated as a priority to strengthen the wing-back positions. Although Stones' pedigree is high, there are also signs of concern about his stability. During the 2025–26 campaign, he was plagued by hamstring and leg injuries which saw him feature in just 18 games in all competitions. However, he bounced back at the World Cup where he played five times and helped England to third place. Inter's medical team will closely monitor his physical condition to ensure he is ready for a long season in Italy. In the market, this is a big blow for other suitors of his services such as Arsenal and Chelsea who have both been linked with Stones after his departure from Manchester. In his brief statement upon arrival in Milan, the defender expressed his excitement for the new challenge and thanked for the warm welcome. Inter will be hoping that the new environment and brand-Chivu system will give Stones renewed vigor and consistent minutes on the field. If the deal is finally closed, Inter will gain an experienced leader at the back who can organize the defense, bring the ball out from the back, and provide experience in big matches—attributes they will need in defense of the Serie A crown and higher European ambitions. Look out for the club's official statement in the coming hours.

What's next

Following his medical examination, Stones is expected to sign a contract with Inter Milan within 24 to 48 hours. His arrival has given Nerazzurri supporters hope that their team will be stronger next season. Inter are committed to strengthening their squad in the summer transfer window, and signing Stones is a key part of their plan.
