Jonathan David at the World Cup looks 'for sale' — Juventus have set a price

Jonathan David became Damien Comolli's first hire last summer — a move that coincided with the quick departure of the CEO who was about to announce his departure. The centre-forward from Ottawa who established himself as a star in Ligue 1 with Lille moved to Torino weeks after the French director arrived.

Even before the transfer, David almost went to Napoli who eventually chose Lorenzo Lucca. In his first year in black and white, David did not live up to expectations: he was not Lois Openda and was far from the previous campaign with 25 goals. By the end of the season, he had scored just eight goals in Turin — a number that put him in a position to be discussed.

The salary and contract issue has also given way to tension within the club. As negotiations for Dusan Vlahovic's new contract came to an end, his statement came out as the talks reached a deadlock: "Why would I ask for as much as David earns?" According to the report, the Serb is demanding more than the six million agreed with David a year ago — a burden that has led to doubts over Comolli's recruitment management.

There is also another contract that reaches such a level: Yildiz, once part of Bayern and now a symbol of the club's new direction, also got a renewal that reached the same ceiling. But the situation of the two is different: while Yildiz is considered the pillar of the project, David is becoming a heavy salary that Juventus may want to let go this summer.

Right now, Juventus is looking to change the story through the World Cup: a big enough performance by the Canadian striker at the prestigious tournament could spark serious interest. The club's valuation of David is rumored to be between €25–30 million — a sum that is hard to be sure a buyer will be willing to pay after his last poor season.

David's opportunity begins when Canada takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina tonight, in an environment Toronto has long awaited for local football. A successful World Cup for the young player from Ottawa could clear up questions and reignite interest in the market.
